Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to participate in the PQMD 2024 Global Health Policy Forum in New York, recognize some familiar faces and meet amazing professionals. This year's conference theme was "Global Health Leadership in Turbulent Times" which resulted in engaging discussions with a wide range of stakeholders: people from government, academia, civil society, the private sector, and various consultants.
The forum highlighted our unpreparedness for future challenges, as evidenced by the Covid-19 pandemic and climate crisis. With a predicted temperature rise of 2.7°C by the end of the century, we are going to experience more frequent and destructive weather events, impacting vulnerable people and disrupting underprivileged health systems. Paul Knox Clarke, Senior Climate Advisor for International Medical Corps forecasted the following increases: the scale and frequency of needs, the complexity of our operational environment, the overall global uncertainty, and our need to change and adapt!
Amidst these challenges, we also celebrate remarkable medical advancements— more in the past 10 years than in the last 100 years! Progress in robotic, genetics, biology, and artificial intelligence (AI) have incredible potential for the health sector. We will have to remain vigilant in making sure how we create, use, and evaluate these new tools.
Finally, the emphasis on multisector partnerships aligns perfectly with our mission at The Max Foundation The Max Foundation, where I work. I resonated deeply with Dr. Peter Singer's message, "Focus on that one thing you do, do it well, do it better, do it more collaboratively, and do it at a larger scale."
We also discussed the importance of building capacity and local sustainability structures in order to make a lasting impact!
