60 Years of Canadian Innovation - Week 22 We rarely stop to think of the science behind the animated cartoons, shows and movies that we eagerly consume from childhood to adulthood but it should come as no surprise that Canadians have been instrumental in many areas of its development. For week 22 of our series, we bring you Key-Frame Animation Software. In the 1970s, Nestor Burtnyk and Marceli Wein, working at the NRC, invented the world's first key-frame animation software.  A keyframe is a frame that defines the beginning or end of a transition in an animation or video. Keyframes are anchor points that tell video editing software when to start and stop an animation. The software then fills in the transition between the keyframes, creating the illusion of continuity.

Here’s a snippet from the April Animation Challenge initiated by Playgrounds Festival. The theme was "childhood dream," and we were limited to using only four colors. Currently, I'm working on the May challenge. I used Toon Boom Harmony for tie-down, clean-up, and coloring. This is great news! Unions for artists! Every industry should have an artists’ union, especially comics and video games. I’ve worked in AAA and mobile games, TV animation, Feature Animation, mainstream and creator-owned comics over the last thirty years. I can tell you there is not a single company or place in these industries that would not be improved by unionized artists. Unions are good for the artist as worker and for the companies that they work for. Think about your own workplace. How many times did you have to stay late? Do extra work without credit? Wonder if you’re ever going to get a raise? Give up that family trip or other important personal event because you were not sure you would have a job to come back to? And mostly, just wonder when your production will have enough people to get the job done properly without burning everyone to the ground? Unions help companies play by the rules and really value the people they employ. Stand up now for unions! And, by the way, unionized artists are the best defense against AI being pushed by know-nothing executives looking to cut overhead and replace you with a machine. If you are not going to stand up for. unionizing now, then when? Unionize!

I'd like everyone in my network to take about five minutes to watch the video below and then come back here for a quick chat about it. OK? I'll wait. Great. You are back. I appreciate it. I was beginning to worry. There are multiple reasons I wanted to highlight the video my friends at Steamroller posted just now. First of all, I wanted to send kudos to friend and former Sentinel colleague Kayla O'Brien on the production. Second, of course, was to remind Jalil Sadool, Keith Lackey and Adam Meyer that they owe a little bit of their success to me, who wrote about them when they were mere months old in early 2015 ... JUST KIDDING! But, I do love their path and how they reached today. But on the other side of this post, I want to put a clear spotlight on a #lesson that I think is great for other #businesses to learn. Steamroller is a fast-growing company but they are not yet Walt Disney World or Lockheed Martin. Few are, of course. However, they quickly acknowledged the importance of telling your own story by putting their #marketing team on it. That said, I know Kayla doesn't come from a traditional marketing background. So, again, it appears that as soon as Steamroller had the right skillsets on the team, they prioritized telling great stories on video. The founding team is one of storytellers at heart, having cut their teeth in Hollywood before they set up shop in Eustis. So they know the value of a good narrative. Now, on to the pitch and, believe it or not, it's not a "ME! ME! ME!" pitch. Orlando has some great storytellers of different skill levels, experience and, perhaps most importantly to some of you, price point. I would be remiss if I didn't mention my photographer friend Steven Seidman and storytelling buddy Dave Vanz. They take as much pride in their work as anyone. As Steamroller shows, the ability to tell your own story is 2024's #marketing hack, frankly. When you control your narrative, you can take it in any direction you'd like, whether it's highlighting an award, new client, new hire or perhaps the CEO's incredible "why" story. One more point before I finish here: look at the footage. A LOT of it was b-roll from years ago. Meaning what? They knew way back then to document their growth and their company. So, basically, you really should be starting today. Anyway, reach out to me if you'd like to learn more about how we can partner to create a storytelling mechanism for your company akin to what Steamroller has established! Or reach out to others in the community to do that because I am just a hardcore advocate for #storytelling in business and would love to see local companies embrace it more at whatever level they can afford (both in time and money).
