#COP29 How can energy players and climate win together? By understanding swiss army knife of energy transition via tools like podcast discussion. Lets unpack this. Today Shell won its climate case appeal in the Netherlands, yet affirming the company’s obligation to cut emissions to combat global warming, as activists argued. Meanwhile, in Australia, Santos faces similar climate litigation, contributing to the nearly 200 climate cases worldwide, including in France and Italy. However, the real pressure on energy majors isn't primarily from court cases; it's from the unknown transformation path of global energy and transport fuels. Electrification, e-fuels, biofuels, gas with CCUS, hydrogen derivatives, and pure hydrogen are emerging as key alternatives. The IEA’s recent report on the rise of electrification and earlier forecasts predicting $15 oil highlight that the answer to future of fossil fuels lies in understanding the energy mix and transportation sector. The pressing question now is how to plan and bet on the transition. With increasing climate obligations on corporations, including supply chains and banks (via mandates for reporting on Paris agreement like the CSRD in Europe), what should industries invest in to ensure long-term returns and to be credibly sustainable without being litigated? What’s the credible "Swiss Army knife" of decarbonization, and how can it generate double-digit returns without relying on subsidies? My answer: there are multiple pathways, which I and my peers explore through a podcast series. 🌍 COP29 Day 1 Highlights in Baku 🌍 Day 1 of COP29 saw intense discussions and critical steps forward. Here are some takeaways: ● 𝗡𝗲𝗴𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀: Agenda-setting ran late as countries worked through disagreements, highlighting the stakes and urgency of climate issues. ● 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁: Countries reached consensus on standards for a global carbon market, paving the way for more transparent and effective emissions trading. ● 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Ørsted and Enel pledged to drive renewable energy projects worldwide, with Enel focusing on expanding clean power across Latin America. COP29 Azerbaijan in Baku is officially in the books, standing as a pivotal milestone in the journey of the Paris Agreement—navigating the challenging path of turning global consensus into national action. Climate Finance: A big step forward with developed nations committing $300B/year by 2035, aiming to mobilize $1.3T for developing nations. Carbon Trading: The long-awaited operationalization of Article 6—laying the groundwork for a global UN-backed carbon market. But the hard work is just beginning. The success of these initiatives depends on the credibility of new carbon markets and bold national targets by 2025, as seen in the new NDCs from the UAE, Brazil, and the UK.   Looking ahead to COP30 in Brazil, the industrial sector has a chance to lead in scaling solutions like green hydrogen, carbon capture, and renewable-powered supply chains.
