Let it snow! I dont’t know about you, but I absolutely love snow. But watching it fall today, I feel a little pang of panic set in as we start the countdown to the festive season. As parents we have to orchestrate Christmas Nativity costumes, ballet shows, pantomimes, Christmas lights, shopping. The list of activities is endless. Add into that working, fundraising and LIFE. How on earth do we make Christmas magical, without losing our sparkle? But I remembered that Nonie offered some really great advice in a post recently. So I revisited this today to help me plan the count down effectively. She suggested thinking of the run up to the festive season as a domino run. Hit the first one right, and the rest will fall into place. Domino number one: what do I need to achieve right now? Domino two: what do you need to achieve this today? Domino three: what do you need to achieve this week? Domino four: what do I want to achieve this month? Domino five: what do I want to achieve before Christmas??? Gulp. So if you want to be able to close your laptop feeling satisfied, with a real sense of achievement this year, methodically drill down where you are now and where you want to go. Navigating Christmas as a Non-Drinker As the holiday season approaches, I find myself reflecting on the unique challenges that come with celebrating Christmas as someone who chooses to not drink alcohol. For me, the decision to abstain is closely tied to my health, in particular my struggle with rheumatoid arthritis. Alcohol can negatively impact my condition, leading to increased inflammation and discomfort, so I choose to prioritise my well-being. However, the realities of social gatherings during this festive season often come with an unspoken pressure surrounding alcohol consumption. Well-meaning friends and family may joke about my choice not to drink or insist I "just have one." While these remarks often stem from a place of love and camaraderie, they can inadvertently create discomfort for those of us who have genuine reasons for abstaining. It's essential to remember that everyone has their own story and unique experiences that shape their relationship with alcohol. From health concerns to personal choices, there are myriad reasons why someone might choose not to drink. This season, let's aim to foster understanding and kindness rather than pressure. To my fellow non-drinkers out there - you're not alone, and your choices are valid. Let’s advocate for a more inclusive atmosphere where respect and acceptance prevail. And to those who enjoy a drink during the holidays, a simple gesture goes a long way: just ask your loved ones if they'd like anything other than alcohol, and be supportive of their choices. In a season meant for celebration and connection, focus on creating environments that uplift everyone. Cheers to a joyful and inclusive Christmas for all, regardless of what’s in the glass we raise. While many embrace the lights, the noise, and the excitement, for others, it can be an overwhelming sensory challenge. 💡🧠 For those living with autism, sensory sensitivities, or mental health struggles, the bright lights, loud music, unpredictable events, and even the uncertainty of opening gifts can feel like too much. 🌟🎁 Comments like: "You’ll enjoy it if you just give it a chance." "It’s just a bit of fun; don’t take it so seriously." "You just need to get out of your comfort zone." "Stop being selfish; it’s just one day." "You’re making excuses not to come." These are often well-meaning but can dismiss the very real struggles some people face. Instead, let’s approach the festive season with empathy and compassion. 💕🤝 Some suggestions on how we can offer support: "It’s okay if you don’t want to join; is there anything we can do to make you feel more comfortable?" 🤗 "I understand that this might feel overwhelming. Let me know if there’s anything you need." 🧡 "Would you like some time alone or a quieter space?" 🌿🪑 Let’s ensure this festive season is as inclusive and supportive as possible. After all, kindness, patience, and acceptance are surely the best gifts we can give one another 🎁🎄✨

We need to remember that not all young people celebrate Christmas and that the festive season can be overwhelming for both those that celebrate but also young people from different religions. The sensory input can be overwhelming leading to meltdowns and unhappy times. Read our top tips to manage sensory overwhelm 👇 1. Make use of sensory equipment such as noise-cancelling headphones/weighted blankets 2. Know what works for and what triggers your child or young person (e.g., Deep pressure may be used to calm them) 3. Avoid events with crowds or find a space that is quiet and therefore less overwhelming. 4. Try to maintain a routine. 5. Take regular breaks and have familiar items your young person can have. 6. Ensure they are not hungry or thirsty. 7. ‘Check-in’ with how they are feeling throughout the holidays. Challenges for Neurodiverse People at Christmas Christmas can be a magical time, but for neurodiverse people, it can also be stressful. Here are some common challenges they may face: 1. Sensory Overload: Bright lights, loud music, and busy crowds can be overwhelming. 2. Changes to Routine: The festive season often disrupts normal schedules, which can feel unsettling. 3. Social Pressure: Big gatherings and small talk can be draining or difficult to navigate. 4. Gift-Giving Stress: Finding the right gifts or shopping in busy stores can be overwhelming. 5. Food and Mealtime Challenges: Unfamiliar foods or crowded tables might cause discomfort. How to Help Share plans in advance so people can prepare. Provide quiet spaces to escape the chaos. Be flexible and understanding if someone needs to opt out or leave early. Small changes can make Christmas a happier time for everyone!
