Yesterday’s announcement from CQC about rebuilding trust in their regulation attracted some fierce criticism from some big names in social care. I’m going to try to get to the nub of why. CQC’s management has, for the last few years, embarked on a project of ‘wheel reinvention,’ which to most observers has seemed, at best, pointless. The old KLOEs and their written characteristics were competent and reasonably well understood by the care sector and inspection teams alike. Inspections took place at regular frequencies. It was far from perfect, but it was functional and functioning. If CQC had successfully replaced the KLOEs with the quality statements and some competent associated guidance, then they would have got back to roughly where they’d started. So, fairly pointless in many ways, but still at least functional. Instead, CQC has destroyed what functioned and demonstrated they are incapable of reinventing the wheel even when there is an existing wheel sitting there for them to look at. This why the sector is so frustrated and has no confidence in them. For example, after months of stress, CQC has implemented a provider portal that in most cases does not do even what the old one did. In yesterday’s statement there is talk of a future co-produced document explaining what ‘Good’ looks like. But we had one of those before - it was perfectly good enough - and many of us strongly suspect that after a long wait the new one will be worse, not better than the original. Then there are ‘pilot projects’ of how to manage relationships with providers. Does anyone else think this is pathetic? Previous regulators didn’t need this, they just managed the relations as part of their work. It was a cultural approach. It was better. Such ‘work-streams’ strike me as a monumental waste of time and effort. It’s like they still don’t quite realise what a crisis they are actually in. They should immediately strip it back to basics, re-implement the stuff that is tried and tested and then get inspectors out into as many care services as possible. Only when they have proved they can do this will they have an audience with any patience to engage with new innovations.

As #NationalCarersWeek continues, we want to celebrate the Care Leaver Covenant and the outstanding work they do to champion opportunities and drive change. The Care Leaver Covenant is a national inclusion programme to support care leavers aged 16-25 in achieving independent living. This initiative, endorsed by participating organisations, is designed to offer additional support beyond what is typically provided by local authorities, ensuring care leavers have access to a broader range of expertise and assistance. RMF is proud to be a member of the Care Leaver Covenant, joining their efforts to: • Ensure care leavers are well-prepared and supported to live independently. • Improve care leavers' access to employment, education, and training opportunities. • Provide stability in care leavers' lives, ensuring they feel safe and secure. • Enhance care leavers' access to health and emotional support services. • Help care leavers achieve financial stability. If you are a carer or know someone who is and would like support, visit Carers UK for help and advice: https://lnkd.in/e8RH4v9Q If you want to pledge and support care leavers across the UK, you can find more information on the Care Leaver Covenant website: https://buff.ly/3tYJ7xR #SupportingCareLeavers #YouthIndependence #UKCareLeavers

Redefining Professionalism in Care: A Call for Recognition and Progression As we reflect back on Professional Care Workers Week, #PCWW24, we're contemplating what true professionalism means in the care sector. Carers demonstrate a unique blend of skills daily - empathy, adaptability, patience, resilience and technical expertise. Yet, this profession often lacks the recognition and career progression it deserves. We believe it's time for change. At Cavalry, we're proud that many of our directors and managers started their journeys as carers. This not only showcases the potential for growth within our organisation but also highlights the wealth of experience and insight that carers bring to leadership roles. Our CEO, Rory McDonnell, who began his career as a carer, is passionate about making a change. Last week, he was one of 20 sector leaders who gathered to discuss the future of the Social Care Workforce, at an event hosted by The Care Workers' Charity. This commitment to driving change from the top demonstrates our dedication to elevating the profession. We're committed to nurturing this talent pipeline, offering wages well above the minimum and creating clear pathways for career advancement. We challenge other healthcare providers to do the same - to see beyond minimum wage and truly value the professional service carers deliver. Let's champion the future of care professionals together. At Cavalry, our own journey proves it: today's compassionate carer often becomes tomorrow's innovative healthcare leader. Join us in recognising their potential, investing in their growth and elevating care work to the professional status it deserves. #CareerInCare #ProfessionalCarers #HealthcareLeadership #CavalryHealthcare #SocialCare

KYN – Know Your Numbers 😁. One of the key takeaways from the NDIS Provider Viability Summit Events organised by DSC? To be honest there were so many. David Hubbard was fortunate to attend all three as a guest panellist giving us the opportunity to speak directly with frontline workers and decision makers. Based on our 10-year NDIS experience he shared real-life practical solutions to doing more with what they have, in particular the leverage of increasing staff utilisation. For Example a 5% improvement in productivity can lead to an increase in revenue of 59% - which goes straight to profit and positive cashflow – its true we’ve helped 100’s of organisations do this over the years! While there were many key takeaways from the events (which no doubt will be summarised over the coming weeks) five key were: - NDIS providers are losing money and the outlook is grim if nothing changes; the point here is that the NDIS model is based on a Lean Operation - Look for efficiencies by systemising where possible (Rostering / Ai / Predictive Analytics) - Support the Leaders making Data Driven Decisions - Navigate the PAPL to maximise participant outcomes and the available revenue - There is a sense of Urgency for decision makers to take action I’ve included a snippet of my one and only slide – utilisation is the window to the soul of the organisation – knowing how staff spend time helps make great data driven decisions and drive successful participant outcomes. If you want to explore this concept more – download the FREE extract of my book ‘The Key To A Thriving NDIS Organisation’ or contact us for more info on the Mentoring Programs. #NDIS #helpingbusinessestobetterservecommunities #cinchtransform #knowyournumbers #financialservices
