Last week, Euractiv hosted a great event on #biofuels. The panelists, Zlatko Kregar (DG MOVE), Ondřej Kovařík (MEP), Loes Knotter (Studio Gear Up) & Luc Pelkmans (IEA TCP), shared valuable insights on the need for regulatory consistency, to drive investment and innovation in the sector. Repsol, has announced a strategic investment into the biomethane sector by acquiring a 40% share in Genia Bioenergy, a Spanish firm specializing in the entire biogas and biomethane value chain. The agreement includes the development of 19 biomethane plants and 11 early-stage projects. These initiatives are set to play a pivotal role in boosting local economies through the creation of agro-industrial ecosystems that leverage waste valorization, particularly in rural areas.   Juan Abascal, Repsol’s Executive Managing Director of Industrial Transformation and Circular Economy, emphasized the strategic importance of this acquisition, stating that it enables the transformation of waste into sustainable fuels, thus integrating Repsol across the biomethane value chain. After my visit to the IAA TRANSPORTATION in Hannover, I have drawn several reflections on the future of sustainable mobility:   👉 The first is the clear commitment of the different commercial vehicle manufacturers to #biofuels, which will be key to reducing CO2 emissions from professional transport. It has been very interesting to see that leading companies in the sector are investing in renewable solutions, from biodiesel (#HVO) to biomethane or, as in our case, #biopropane (#BioAutogas).   👉 Technology diversification with a neutral approach, and the analysis of emissions from a ‘well-to-wheel’ point of view, will be essential to achieve Europe's #ZeroEmissionsNet targets.   👉 And the last one is that I predict a long life for combustion engines, thanks to the various advances we are making in terms of emission reductions.    #IAATransportation2024 #IAATransportation2024 #Herko #Bios35 #BioBLP #BioAutogas #Roadtodecarbonization

These initiatives are supported by biomass and biogas plants, helping to reduce dependence on fossil resources and promoting regional economic development. 🔥 The biogas industry is on fire – not literally, as shown in the picture, but it’s certainly a fitting illustration of the momentum and growth we’re experiencing right now. Denmark, with its renowned Danish biogas model, is leading the way in sustainable development. This week, I had the pleasure, alongside the Embassy of Denmark in Italy and thanks to the organization by Rino Festi and Pernille Autzen Jacobsen, to guide a delegation of ten Italian business professionals through four Danish biogas plants. Our distinguished guests included representatives from A2A, Eni, Maccarese S.p.A., and Ringas. Our journey began at Nature Energy Midtfyn, Nature Energy’s first installation, which has been operational since 2016. Next, we visited Gemidan’s waste treatment facility in Northern Odense, where they process all the source-separated household waste from Odense – a great example of Denmark’s approach to circular economy and waste management. The following day, we explored Storde Biogas, a farmer-owned plant that collects cow manure from 25 farms. This cooperative model, which resonates with Italy’s biogas structure but on a larger scale, shows how farmers can join forces to create a plant that hits the financial sweet spot of low operating costs. Our final stop was Blaabjerg Biogas, one of Denmark’s oldest joint biogas plants, operating since the early ‘90s. Over the decades, it has grown significantly, now supplying heat to the town of Nr. Nebel and gas to heat a tropical waterpark. This plant perfectly illustrates the potential of biogas to fuel local prosperity – a theme I’ve highlighted in an article here. https://lnkd.in/dS3_PR6e A personal highlight for me was revisiting these plants where I’ve been involved in various projects over the years. It’s always rewarding to see how projects I’ve contributed to have grown and evolved.
