There’s been a lot of news about the British Royals recently, but the story you missed is one of the most important… The Prince’s commitment to ending homelessness. #Homewards was founded by Prince William and The Royal Foundation of The Prince and Princess of Wales in June 2023 and over the next five years is working with six flagship locations across the UK to deliver innovative solutions that prevent and end homelessness. Even in the midst of what we now know has been a difficult time for the future king’s family, he made the trip to Sheffield to join city leaders and the leadership of Homebase to to announce the newest partnerships to support to families and individuals on the brink of or experiencing homelessness. That includes Homebase’s £1 million commitment. It’s an incredible next step in an already innovate approach that not only the UK, but the world should know about. Which is also true about the Royal family’s philanthropy - it is important and transformative, and reflects the real importance in their roles in British society. As we plan to bring the Forbes Impact Lab to the UK and Europe this year, these are the kinds of stories and the partners we are looking to amplify and help share with our global impact-focused audience. Not the stories of gossip… The stories of change. Kudos to the Royal Foundation, the A+ team that leads the Homewards initiative and the teams at Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF), Nationwide Foundation and FrameWorks UK for this important collaboration. Let’s get building. #OptimisticNorth ———- (Have stories for Forbes to share? Leaders we should know? Partnerships we should develop? If we want to close the housing gap for First Nations peoples in the future, we need to lay a strong foundation now. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples know what is best for their communities, which is why we consulted with more than 300 people and organisations to create the Our Place Roadmap and Action Plan. Based on this consultation, we have five outcome areas to focus on: - Creating First Nations housing outcomes that are guided by First Nations leadership and shared decision-making. - Growing a stronger sector that delivers these outcomes. - Making sure that housing and homelessness support services are fair, reliable, accessible, and culturally safe. - Delivering housing supply solutions that are more culturally responsive. - Increasing access to private market rental and home ownership opportunities. There’s a lot of work to be done. You can find out more about our plan here 👉🏾 https://lnkd.in/geWHBRXZ If you or someone you know needs housing help, you can call 13 QGOV (13 74 68) or contact your local Housing Service Centre during business hours 👉🏾 https://lnkd.in/giyr5fwg If you are experiencing or are at risk of homelessness, contact the Homeless Hotline for free on 1800 474 753 (24/7). For the 3rd year in a row, the City of San Jose is proposing to cut Measure E dollars intended for affordable housing production and shift them to temporary shelters. The budget proposal cuts $36 million from affordable housing—342 bedrooms in 240 new affordable homes—which would have served thousands of families over 99 years. “San Jose residents have named affordable housing and housing affordability as one of their top priorities — consistently,” Regina Celestin Williams, Executive Director of housing advocacy nonprofit SV@Home, told San José Spotlight. “All the efforts to address what residents are most concerned about would be at risk if we don’t have consistent investment and prioritization by leadership into affordable housing. That means longer timelines of getting to homes for people who are at lower income or risk of displacement.” Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gd6HGb6V #svathome #affordablehousing #measureE #sanjose #housingpolicy

The Current Housing Crisis: A Perspective from the Front Lines The housing crisis is something that impacts us all, but for many, it’s a daily struggle that goes beyond rising rent prices or lack of affordable housing. Working as a Homelessness Options & Assessment Officer, I’ve seen first hand how deeply this crisis affects individuals and families. Every day, I meet people who are one step away from homelessness or already in vulnerable situations, and it’s a stark reminder of how urgent and complex this issue has become. My role involves assessing housing needs, providing advice, and securing safe, affordable housing for those at risk. It’s challenging work, but it’s also incredibly rewarding to help people navigate through what is often one of the toughest times in their lives. Yet, I can’t help but feel that more needs to be done on a systemic level. From my perspective, there are key areas that need urgent attention: • Increased investment in affordable housing: More sustainable, long-term solutions are needed, particularly in the social housing sector. • Stronger support systems: We need better coordination between local authorities, charities, and housing providers to ensure people don’t fall through the cracks. • Preventive measures: Early intervention and access to resources can stop people from reaching crisis points in the first place. I’d love to hear your thoughts. What changes do you think are necessary to address the housing crisis? And for those of you working in housing or homelessness services, what are you seeing on the ground? #HousingCrisis #HomelessnessPrevention #AffordableHousing #SocialImpact #HousingSolutions #LocalGovernment #UnitedKingdom

Building new homes is paramount to confronting the current housing crisis, but it takes time. Time that people facing homelessness don’t have. So we’re investigating the use of our sites slated for development to provide temporary accommodation for those that need it most, particularly during the harsh winter months. Partnering with community housing providers and support services to use these properties as temporary accommodation means we can make the most of our housing portfolio and provide immediate housing for the most vulnerable in the community. Can affordable housing transform declining neighborhoods? One organization believes it can—and it’s already doing so. Based in San Angelo, Texas, Galilee is a not-for-profit organization providing affordable housing options for residents on low to moderate incomes. Stephanie Hamby, MPA, Executive Director of Galilee CDC, and Carlos Cruz, Rehabilitation Manager, discuss the organization's impact on affordable housing and homelessness, focusing on community engagement and partnerships. "With the category of 18-to-30-year-olds leaving school or the foster care system, these individuals are susceptible to homelessness or ‘couch surfing’, but by thinking upstream, we can provide good quality, affordable apartments to combat these potential issues." The sollutions to homelessness don’t have to be complicated. We don’t have to wait for large grants and government programs We don’t have to wait for section 8 developers and fundraisers Each day we have an opportunity to grow. With every lot of land for sale and every contractor who needs steady work. There is a win-win when we break the mold of housing interventions and find person centered and community focused solutions. Yes apartments are great but action now is the best. The best action any of us can do is start having compassion and an open mind to how we can help those who fall through cracks. As we can’t just build a few units that takes years and think that is enough. We have to constantly work to empower and fill the housing gaps in our community. #letsgrow #construction #housing

🏠 An emergency warning was issued last month as homelessness in London reached new records. New analysis from a cross-party London Councils group reveals that over 183,000 Londoners are homeless and living in temporary accommodation, the highest-ever recorded level, affecting at least one in 50 residents. We are calling for a shift towards social and affordable housing, which allows money to be recycled and reinvested over time. This is a smarter alternative to the £114 million in one-off payments that Local Authorities spend each month on temporary accommodation, a cost that has increased by 68% compared to last year. Notting Hill Genesis is one such example of a housing association in our portfolio with almost six decades of experience in managing social properties and tackling the housing crisis. In 2023 it partnered with Resonance’s National Homelessness Property Fund 2, through which it will manage almost 600 properties aimed at supporting families in the highest need. 👉 Swipe to discover the scale of impact Notting Hill Genesis has created through social investment.

📣 Big news. NSW is ending no-grounds evictions - one of the most effective actions we can take to address Sydney’s chronic housing crisis >> https://lnkd.in/gurub76Z As Eamon Waterford said to the Daily Telegraph for today's story, our research with Scyne Advisory shows less than half of all children born today will ever own a home in Sydney. By the time they retire, most will have rented their whole lives. That means we're just a generation away from being a society where renting is no longer something you do for a period of your life, but something most people do forever. If people are going to rent for their whole lives, then renting has to be fit-for-purpose for all stages of life. Rental conditions must give people the support they need to put down roots and build community and connection. The government’s taken a series of actions over the past year that will go a long way to solving the housing crisis, but it’s going to take time to see results. Ending no-grounds evictions will materially improve the lives of the third of Sydneysiders who rent for the better immediately. 👏👏👏 Chris Minns, Anoulack Chanthivong, Trina Jones, Kiersten Fishburn, James Cullen, Edward Ovadia, Sachin Saxena, Ellyse Harding, Brooke O'Rourke, Rheuben Freelander, Linda Silmalis, Estelle Grech, Tom Loomes, NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure, Housing Now!, Chris Taylor, David Borger, Homelessness NSW, Leo Patterson Ross
