Everlab’s Post

Everlab reposted this

Hearing our patients’ stories often reminds me how unpredictable and fragile health can be. Last week, we saw a young man in his 20s, doing everything right—exercising, eating well, avoiding alcohol and smoking—yet he had one of the highest heart risks we’ve ever measured. Meanwhile, this week a long-time smoker—a pack a day for 15 years—had a pristine lung scan. Unfortunately, it’s quite a common case. How many of us know someone who seemed perfectly healthy but faced a sudden cancer diagnosis or heart attack? My takeaway? We have to move from generic to personalised care. True health outcomes require understanding each person’s unique genetics, history, lifestyle, and environment—and tailoring a strategy around them. At Everlab, we’re building the technology to make personalised healthcare accessible at scale—and we’re excited to bring it to more and more people in the months ahead.

Phrases I’ve heard (and would hear in these cases): “That’s lucky.” “That’s bad luck.” Personalised healthcare is how we take ‘luck’ out of medicine. The more patients I’ve seen (30,000+ and counting), the more I’ve learned not to be surprised by surprises. We have to appreciate not just broader trends (like rising cancer rates), but the importance of understanding the patient in front of you through their personal and unique health data.

Let that sink in… my question is: how did the young patient in his 20s move on? Is there something he can do about it? (Since he’s already taking care of his health in best possible ways?)

You're absolutely right! The generalized approach to human health is primarily useful for statistical analysis and developing broad public health strategies. Personalized approach can be more impactful, taking into account genetics, environment, and lifestyle. One of the main challenges with implementing a person-specific approach is that it can be costly and time-consuming.

This really shows how unpredictable health can be! It’s crucial that you move beyond one-size-fits-all approaches to truly understand and address individual health needs.

This is a clear example of why health care needs to shift from a one-size-fits-all approach to something more personalised. Considering individual factors like genetics and lifestyle is essential for better outcomes. Moving in this direction feels like a necessary step for the future of healthcare.

Such a powerful reminder of the unpredictability of health! Personalised care is truly the future, but I think it's also important to consider how social determinants like stress and access to healthcare play a huge role in health outcomes. Looking forward to seeing how Everlab continues to innovate in this space!
