🇪🇺OSL Workshop: Moving Europe: A Podcast Series 🗓 When? •September 25th (Amsterdam) •October 9th (Leiden, podcast workshop) •October 30th and November 6th (Amsterdam) •November 27th (Leiden, podcast recording), •December 11th and 18th (Amsterdam) NB: All classes will take place at 15:00-18:00, with the exception of the recording session on 27/11 (13:00-17:00). 🚨Registration will open on 2 September 2024 In this workshop, we will investigate how literature is able to reflect, talk back, deconstruct and challenge different narratives of Europe that circulate in the European public sphere. Narratives, for example, that teleologically construct Europe as having a clear historical origin; that rewrite European history to serve a specific political agenda; that function as bordering spaces of in- and exclusion; that imagine Europeans as a homogeneous group; or that conceive of Europe as a social constitution of overlapping and potentially conflicting identities. ℹ️ More information on the event, registration, and venues: https://lnkd.in/dSWSNXs3

🇪🇺 📉 Is Europe being left behind in the technology revolution? On this episode of the IEA Podcast, host and IEA Director of Public Policy and Communications Matthew Lesh is joined by David Galbraith, a British architect, designer and internet entrepreneur to ask: Is Europe Being Left Behind? Galbraith argues that Europe's postwar economic model rewarding hard work but providing a massive welfare state is now unaffordable given demographic realities. He sees Europe struggling to adapt to the digital and post-industrial economy, lacking companies on the scale of U.S. tech giants like Google, Amazon and Apple. Cultural factors like greater risk aversion have held Europe back from the kind of technological breakthroughs seen in Silicon Valley. 📺 Join Matthew and David on the latest IEA Podcast ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/eybE2zCU

🚀 [ECA Tech Talks #5] The High Cost of Failure in Tech in Europe 🎙️ In our latest episode, ECAs general manager Andrea Vaugan dives deep into the alarming trends in the tech industry with our special guest, Oliver Coste. Here’s a glimpse of what we uncovered: 💡 Stagnation in Europe: Over the past 20 years, Europe has seen a dramatic decline in its share of global R&D in tech. Similarly, France has also fallen from 6% to 2%. 🌍 Global Shifts: While Europe has struggled, the US has maintained its dominance in the tech sector, and China has skyrocketed, now contributing around 25% to global innovation and R&D. 🔍 Why It Matters: This significant decline in European innovation impacts the continent’s competitiveness and future growth. What’s driving this downward trend, and what can be done to reverse it ? Tune in to hear Olivier Coste’s expert insights and learn more about the challenges and opportunities facing the European tech landscape. 🎧 Listen now and join the conversation on how we can foster a more innovative and competitive Europe. This afternoon, while listening to the podcast called “Your Business: In Space” by Inter Astra Institute, I found myself beaming when the guest said, “…we realised there was a huge gap in strategic thinking…” I vibe with this! Constantly I have always argued that Africa does not have a capacity problem in the #Space sector and in many other sectors. What Africa has is a strategy problem! All the chess pieces are there but, they are just not arranged to win. The myth of capacity building in Africa is that when you take African professionals and place them in international environments, they lead, excel and thrive. This means what African leaders and institutions need to do is to align this capacity, harness this capacity and specialize this capacity that we already have and demonstrate. This can be done through policy which is built to fertilize innovation and is honed to support industry sectors using #Space technology especially #Earth #Observation. The guest was Davis Cook, the CEO of RIIS - Research Institute for Innovation and Sustainability I recommend you take a listen to this episode. It’s aptly titled: Africa's Role in the Global Space Economy.
