ESN CEO Alfonso L. moderated today a session on mental health and digitalisation at an event organised by our partner Edenred and European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) at the European Parliament with MEP Estelle Ceulemans. Digitalisation permeates eveything today so addressing the potential pitfalls is as important as seizing its opportunities.

In this episode, we're joined by Dr Julie Denning, Managing Director and Chartered Health psychologist at Working2Wellbeing and chair of the Vocational Rehabilitation Association. Also joining us is Generali's own early intervention and rehabilitation expert, Kay Needle to discuss the latest thinking in support for employees with long-term conditions. Around 15 million people in England alone have a long-term condition. That's a condition that has to be managed with drugs or treatment such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke or cancer. And the number of people with three or more long-term conditions or multimorbidity, is ever-rising, bringing with it rising demand for prevention and management. Even long COVID, which is not as prevalent as any of these conditions but is arguably receiving most attention in the media, at least, is now verging into this territory and is also contributing to the wider discussion around chronic fatigue. Such conditions are more prevalent than others, but will undoubtedly impact people in most workplaces. So what are the trends? The latest thinking and support and barriers to progress?

Interim CEO, Amanda Murphy, represented BHN at Mental Health Australia's Members Policy Forum in Melbourne yesterday. Amanda joined Sharon Lawn (Executive Director, Lived Experience Australia) and Natalie Sullivan (CEO EACH) on a panel facilitated by Andrew Bird (Foundstone) to discuss ’Enabling Sustainability’ in Mental Health. The event was attended by more than 100 CEOs, executives and leaders from the mental health sector. The Forum theme, ‘Driving Change’, reflected the sector’s resolve to drive a cohesive, effective strategy for mental health reform into the future. Key themes of the panel discussion included the need for partnerships and collaboration, the need for system innovation, the importance of lived and living experience in all parts of the system including leadership, and the need to find efficiencies - not just in service delivery but also in government commissioning processes. It was a our honour to help set the shared vision for improving mental health for all Australians. Thanks to Carolyn Nikoloski CEO, Mental Health Australia for inviting BHN to help lead this important conversation. #MentalHealthMatters

MHCC Director of Policy & Systems Reform Corinne Henderson and Project Coordinator Katy Sam represented MHCC recently in a webinar with Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care for the release of resources to support implementation of the National Safety and Quality Mental Health Standards for community managed organisations. These resources are extremely valuable for consumers and carers to be able to understand what the Standards mean for them and how they can contribute, as well as guiding service providers with easily-accessible information on implementation strategies. Corinne and Katy spoke to the significance of true and meaningful co-design as well as the guide for service providers, in which MHCC had a key role developing. "We know that the promotion and delivery of high-quality services is an important safeguard against the risk of significant harm for people living with mental health conditions. It was really important to highlight that providing people with quality supports and services in a safe and competent environment with care and skill is an important obligation for all organisations." - Katy Sam, Project Coordinator Catch up on this webinar which breaks down the significance of the Standards and the corresponding resources. https://lnkd.in/gzgFW-FU

Great insight from the IACP-PRAS. It seems intuitive that the job of policing has inherent stressors that impact employees negatively and there are myriad programs to address these. What is not often considered is that the culture leaders create with an overemphasis on the negative and accountability creates a toxic work environment that ultimately causes burnout and employees leaving their careers early. More time needs to be focused on ensuring employees feel valued throughout their careers and beyond.
Bad leadership can have a profound impact on first responders, often causing as much damage as the traumatic events they face. What's even more concerning is that the trauma inflicted by first responder organizations is frequently overlooked and left unaddressed. (Thanks to the IACP-PRAS for highlighting this research in Boston this week!)
