🇪🇸 News from our project partners: UMA at the international Conference in Burgos (Spain) The UMA LeaFaP team presented a paper at the international conference in Burgos (Spain), the I Congreso Internacional de Educación de la Universidad Isabel I - Viejos retos y nuevos debates y desafíos de la educación, celebrated on April 25th-26th, where international experts discussed new challenges faced by education. In our paper, we provided an overview of the LeaFaP project, detailing its objectives, activities, and key outcomes. We presented the findings of our literature review on PLC facilitation and leadership, shedding light on best practices and areas for improvement in this critical aspect of professional development. Additionally, we shared insights from our report on the challenges and needs faced by PLC leaders and facilitators, offering valuable insights for capacity building in this area. As the world is rocked by instability, from climate change to violent conflict and political upheaval, leadership is more important than ever and at the heart of quality #education. In fact, educational leadership is widely recognized as the second most important factor influencing learning outcomes – right after teachers.   The 2024/5 GEM Report UNESCO, released last week at UNESCO’s Global Education Meeting in Fortaleza, #Brazil, examines the requirements of good leadership in education and how they vary between countries and over time.   The key question is: What do school leaders need to succeed? Based on the GEM Report and my own experience, I believe we can identify four main components – I call them the ‘four Ts’ - for successful leadership in education.   The first is 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲. School leaders need time to focus on their core roles, such as overseeing teaching, and not only school administration.   The second is 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁. Schools need qualified, experienced, and diverse leaders to steer action. Yet less than two-thirds of countries employ competitive recruitment practices for primary and secondary school principals.   The third is 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴. For school leaders to deliver, they need to be properly trained. Today, half of principals, even in the richest countries, currently start their role with no leadership training at all.   And finally, the fourth T: 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁. For principals to lead and innovate effectively, they need autonomy to make academic, financial, and staffing decisions.   A strong school leader is necessary to help steady the ship, to provide stability at the school level, and act as a solid partner in achieving SDG 4. And to continue the metaphor...
