❓ In terms of the academy: is Atalanta the FC Barcelona of Italy? When Atalanta B.C. played against Real Madrid C.F. in August... 👉 10 of the 23 called-up players were from the academy. 💥 Most of them came from the region around Bergamo. ▪ Growing players for the first team is one thing. ▪ It's another to produce talent that makes you win in Europe. Atalanta B.C. recently launched a second team in the Italian 3rd division. Today, European Club Association (ECA) and Football Benchmark published a comprehensive report about the transition process from Academy to First Team Football. The study and its Executive Summary (both available for download for all stakeholders of the football industry) are the outputs of more than a year's work, including: 🔍 A 360-degree view of all aspects of the topic, including the supporting environment of players and the regulatory and competition context of clubs. 🎤 Insights and best practices from close to 30 subject matter experts, including Academy Directors, Transition Coaches, Supporting Stakeholders and global Subject Matter Experts, headlined by Arsène Wenger. 📑 A club survey filled by close to 100 clubs, investigating Europe-wide opinions in club strategies, internal club processes and different models of transition. 📈 A large-scale statistical analysis of player debuts and successful transitions between the 2018/19 and 2022/23 seasons, uncovering trends, best performing leagues and clubs and player case studies. 🚨 Gareth Southgate: "It’s an experiment! We don't have a natural replacement for Kalvin Phillips." Really? You have incredible young pool of talent both in the squad and on the bench, yet you're focusing on someone who has barely played any league matches and isn't even in the squad. What kind of message does this send to the players who currently play in that position? His statement could have significant negative effects on their morale and performance. It's disheartening for talented players to see their hard work overlooked, especially when another player who wasn't even selected for the Euros is mentioned. After drawing with Denmark in the European Championship, these questionable decisions from the head coach can further demotivate and create doubts within the team. This is the exact reason why I encourage players to take the last shot of the game when they have the last possession. It can be at the end of the first quarter, the second quarter or the third quarter. It can be at the end of the game like in this situation… When you take the last shot at the right time, you don’t leave any opportunity to the other team to score. Is it a lucky shot? Is it deserved? Who cares? The ball falls in and France qualifies for the semifinals. For the little story, France led the game for only 14 seconds (in the last twenty seconds of the game) and Noah Penda scored his only basket of the game 1/7FG (2/2 FT) to steal the win. I understand that some coaches might have another philosophy, looking to take a quick shot to eventually have an opportunity to get another chance with an offensive rebound, but to me this is the play that makes sense the most when you look to win games. And that’s ok if we don’t all agree on this.
