🐝🐞 PFAS in Pesticides: Time for Action TFA, a persistent chemical from PFAS in pesticides, is contaminating our water and even reaching remote areas. The EU must enforce control-at-source measures to protect our drinking water. EurEau Secretary General Oliver Loebel: "Banning flufenacet and flutolanil is a critical step. Member States must act to halt the rise of TFA in water resources and withdraw all PFAS-containing pesticides." 💧 Prevention is better than costly, unsustainable water treatment. Let's protect our future. https://lnkd.in/gzQGibUd #WaterQuality #PFAS #Sustainability

Reason #415 why #water and #wastewater #utilities will struggle for such a long time with the new US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) #PFAS MCLs. If you've seen me speak, you know I've said this for years. Pesticides in runoff from local ag are widely believed to be the reason why service providers without a known PFAS polluter on their source waters find themselves right at or over the MCLs. The Potomac River is one such source where a polluter hasn't been ID'd, yet the PFAS levels found put local water providers at risk for BILLIONS in advanced treatment costs. We're always told PFOA and PFOS levels are coming down because they were phased out of use more than a decade ago. Welp.

𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗥𝗘𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧: 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 🚰 Today, Pesticide Action Network (PAN) Europe and GLOBAL 2000 publish a brand new report highlighting the alarming presence of the forever chemical 'TFA', a specific type of PFAS pesticide, in our drinking water ⚠ The study, conducted across 11 EU Member States, found TFA in 34 of 36 tap water samples❗ With much of Europe grappling with endemic drought and growing water scarcity, we need to be protecting our vital drinking water sources - not polluting it further! PFAS ('forever chemicals') pose known threats to our environment as well as our health, with multiple studies showing the number of risks ☣ But the answers are in front of us. And we expect the EU decisionmakers to act. To protect our vital drinking water sources, here's what we need to see 👇 1️⃣ An immediate ban on PFAS pesticides 2️⃣ An immediate ban on F-gases 3️⃣ Swift implementation of the general PFAS restriction according to REACH (the EU's chemicals regulation) 4️⃣ Establishment of a safe drinking water limit for TFA at EU level 5️⃣ Setting quality standards for TFA for waters regulated under the Water Framework Directive 6️⃣ Wherever it is necessary to purify water due to chemical contamination, the Polluter Pays Principle must be applied 7️⃣ Support to farmers in replacing the use of PFAS pesticides with other, ideally chemical-free, forms of crop protection Full report 👉 https://lnkd.in/d9T2YTBR #ToxicFreeFuture #BanPFAS #DrinkingWater #WaterPollution #PFAS #Pesticides #WaterScarcity #ForeverChemicals #AquaticEcosystems #Health #WaterWiseEU #WaterProtection #PolluterPays #PolluterPaysPrinciple

Pesticides in water bodies - there is still work to be done 💪 The VSA Water Quality Platform and #Eawag have analysed the effects to date of the measures taken under the "Action Plan for Risk Reduction and Sustainable Use of #Pesticides" on water quality. The number of limit value exceedances has decreased significantly since 2019. Nevertheless, many kilometres of rivers and streams are still contaminated. #Pyrethroids pose a particularly high risk to watercourses. The latest analyses show that although the measures are effective, our streams and rivers are still heavily polluted with plant protection products: Ecotoxicological limits were exceeded at 22 of the 36 sites analysed (61%). On the other hand, it is encouraging that there were significantly fewer locations with more than 10 limit value exceedances in 2022. An improvement trend is therefore visible, at least for the heavily polluted watercourses. 👉 Read more: https://lnkd.in/dbQ5Z74W BAFU Wasser: https://lnkd.in/dwMegBdj VSA - Verband Schweizer Abwasser- und Gewässerschutzfachleute 📷 Della Bella / VSA

"Forever chemicals," or #PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), continue to be one of the leading health hazards facing the public today ⚠️ While the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is expected to finalize regulations on PFAS in drinking water this month, concrete solutions for removing PFAS from our everyday environment are still a ways out. PFAS are used in hundreds of common household products and industry activities. 🏭 Food (and food packaging) are the biggest route of PFAS exposure, followed by dust/indoor air, and finally drinking water. Testing your water is the best way to understand how PFAS may be affecting your household (Tap Score offers specialized kits that test between 14-40 of the most common PFAS!). 🔬💧 Test results in hand, you can tailor your filter/treatment selection to minimize your exposure. What's the issue here? Without proper backflow prevention measures, certain activities can inadvertently introduce harmful substances, fertilizers, pesticides, or even human waste into the water supply. By implementing correct backflow protection in line with “The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999”, we can defend against such cross-contamination, safeguarding both human and environmental health.
