World Mental Health Day is observed on October 10 each year, with the goal of raising awareness about mental health issues and mobilizing efforts to support mental health globally. It was initiated by the World Federation for Mental Health in 1992 and is now supported by the World Health Organization (WHO). The day is an opportunity to highlight the importance of mental health care and advocate for better services and policies, aiming to reduce stigma and discrimination around mental health conditions. Each year, the day has a theme to focus global attention on particular aspects of mental health. The theme for 2024 is “Mental Health is a Universal Human Right,” emphasizing the need to prioritize mental health in all sectors of society. It’s a reminder that everyone should have access to mental health care without discrimination or barriers. Many organizations and communities around the world participate in campaigns, events, and activities to promote mental well-being, mental health education, and the importance of early intervention and support.

🌟 Just wrapped up a thought-provoking experience as a participant in the focus group discussion on “Trainen van multidisciplinaire competenties in de mentale gezondheidszorg - wat zijn de behoeften en wensen” organized by EU-Promens. This collaborative platform brought together voices from various sectors to address the key question: How can we best train and develop multidisciplinary competencies in mental health care? As someone working across national mental health models and academia, engaging in this dialogue was a meaningful opportunity to share insights and learn from other professionals who are equally passionate about advancing mental health practices. It was inspiring to explore the shared needs and aspirations that professionals and communities have for shaping a more integrated, responsive, and holistic approach to mental health care. The discussion reinforced the importance of fostering cross-disciplinary skills and highlighted innovative strategies that could strengthen collaboration in mental health services. It’s rewarding to contribute to initiatives that seek practical solutions for complex challenges faced by mental health practitioners and stakeholders alike. A big thank you to EU-Promens for organizing this important conversation. 10th October is #WorldMentalHealthDay, the result of a global advocacy and awareness program started by the World Federation for Mental Health in 1992 and acknowledged and supported by World Health Organization.    It is an enormous opportunity to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world, show support for people who are struggling, and mobilize efforts in support of mental health care. For us and all other stakeholders working in the field, today is also an important opportunity to talk about our work and findings, as well as highlight what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality accessible for all people worldwide. Our National Suicide Research Foundation (NSRF) research has, similar to other countries, identified increasing rates of self-harm in young Irish people, an ongoing trend since 2010. We need to better understand the contributory factors to this trend in Ireland. Africa’s ingenuity in mental health care is truly inspiring! Initiatives like Kenya’s Shamiri Institute and Zimbabwe’s Friendship Bench are reshaping access to mental health support. Training peers and community leaders as counsellors creates safe spaces for conversations about resilience and well-being. These programs prove that meaningful impact doesn’t always need massive funding but innovative, culturally rooted solutions. The current ‘decolonisation of global health’ movement is driving a critical examination of the research and practice of global mental health. Despite efforts to promote equity, justice and health for all, colonial frameworks of global health are still embedded in existing ideologies and practices. In our upcoming #MHForAll webinar on Tuesday 26th March, 9AM GMT, we will be joined by expert panellists from India, South Africa, Denmark, Indonesia and more, to delve into this complex issue.
