This story hits home for me. A similar situation just happened to me in real life on a commercial fire claim my firm is representing. I personally negotiate all large commercial losses for our firm. I had agreed on scope and an estimated price with the independent field adjuster on a commercial fire claim. He was even told, by his manager, we needed an agreed scope before he left the meeting. He turned in his comparable estimate and his firm cut it down to 1/3 of what we agreed was fair. He was not happy at all. The carrier sent a check for 1/3 without even reviewing it with me. Thankfully the carrier agreed to send out an actual experienced fire adjuster from JS Held. The carrier desk adjuster was understanding when I explained how unreasonable this whole situation was. The new independent adjuster also agreed with our scope and estimate while on site. I am waiting on his estimate now. This doesn’t happen often as we have been working in Ohio for so long that most adjusters know and respect our work enough to be fair once we explain our estimate and reasoning for every legitimate line item we include in our estimates. When this type of corporate greed happens to our clients, the wind gets knocked out of my sails and it’s just awful. It ruins my day and really weighs on me. I then can’t stop working on that file until we get a resolution. That could take weeks, months or even years in some cases. We always end up winning in the end but it causes a lot of down time and suffering for our clients and even sometimes a long legal battle. I am glad this is finally being exposed The need to hire a licensed public adjuster on large complex losses is more important now then ever. Getting a licensed advocate on your side from day one is very important so we can collaborate with the insurance carrier and try to resolve the claim in a reasonable amount of time. It always seems to help when I explain that I have been in their shoes before when I represented insurance companies. Sometimes nothing can cut through the corporate greed though.
