Do you know that eyebrow raise that people do when you say you work in HR, or the little joke about Human Remains? I am always baffled that a profession focused on getting the best out of people and for people prompts a similar reaction to saying you are a car salesman! When you start a new role or meet a new team it can be like you have a job to do prove yourself and un-do any bad experiences that they have had of HR. Exhausting! Last week I ran a webinar on “How to be more visible when you work in HR” and we talked about HR’s reputation and ways to positively impact it. So what can you do? Here are some tips that are worth some thought: 1. Think about how HR contributes to business goals and link it to what you are doing 2. Take some time to prepare for meetings and share achievements for you and your team – you can’t get any credit if no-one knows 3. Work on your relationships – especially your manager, they can be one of the big challenges in HR roles, sometimes because they don’t understand what you do. Think about what they need and in what format so they can see the benefits of what you do and share them with others. 4. Set some boundaries and stick to them – being all things to all people can dilute your efforts. If you would like a re-play of the webinar send me a DM.

I think it would be fair to say “putting yourself first” sounds like a very sensible thing to do so why do people who work in HR find it so flipping difficult? We want to please people, we want to help and we want people to have a good impression of HR. We are often up against negative views of the profession and confusion over our roles which I’m sure contributes to this. The good news is that it doesn’t need to be this way. It did take me a while to figure it out and it is still a work in progress but there are small steps you can take to start putting yourself first so that you can do a good job without running yourself into the ground. If you want to get started, join Sarah and I on 12th June at midday on Zoom for our free webinar “How to put yourself first when you work in HR”.

HR professionals play a critical role in translating human potential to drive business value for any company. I believe to accomplish this, we must lead with empathy and vulnerability, show up as humans, and continuously connect the dots between organizational development and business success. I spoke with Bianca N. Herron at HR Daily Advisor recently about how human resources professionals can help connect the potential of employees to the success of an organization. Read more about how we can bridge this gap, and some of my personal philosophies, in my Faces of HR interview. #PeopleLeader #HumanResources #Workforce #EmployeeExperience https://lnkd.in/g2FyT325
