Back in September, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed the Retail Worker Safety Act (RWSA) into law. The Act, which will go into effect 6/1/2025, requires covered New York retail employers to: ✔️ Adopt a workplace violence prevention policy ✔️ Train workers on workplace violence prevention strategies ✔️ Install panic buttons throughout the workplace (applies only to retailers with 500+ employees nationwide) If you're in the retail industry, head to our blog to find out what this means for you 👉 https://lnkd.in/ehXdSiXv

Gen Z workers are more likely to witness workplace violence—but not speak up: A new report by compliance training company Traliant found that nearly half of Gen Z workers would only report concerns about workplace violence anonymously. In September, New York enacted a law designed to protect retail workers from violence on the job. On September 4th, 2024, Governor Kathy Hochul signed the Retail Worker Safety Act into law, aimed at enhancing protections for retail workers across New York State. This new legislation, which takes effect in March 2025, requires retail employers with 10 or more employees to develop a workplace violence prevention plan. The law mandates annual training for workers, covering: - De-escalation tactics to handle confrontations, - Active shooter drills for emergency preparedness, - Emergency procedures to ensure quick and effective responses to incidents. Additionally, employers with over 500 employees must install panic buttons by January 2027 to provide workers with immediate access to emergency help. The law’s goal is to prevent workplace violence and create safer environments for both workers and shoppers.
