Day 2: Safeguarding Adults Week: To support Safeguarding Adults week and the theme of Working in Partnership, I encourage us all to think about Making Safeguarding Personal (MSP) today, enhancing collaboration and outcomes. Making Safeguarding Personal represents a transformative approach in safeguarding culture and practice, centered on the insights from those being safeguarded. It emphasizes: - Engaging in meaningful conversations that enhance involvement, choice, control, and improve quality of life and safety. - Recognising individuals as experts in their own lives and working collaboratively with them. - Shifting from a process-led approach to one where processes support a series of substantive conversations. The focus is on understanding and recording individuals' desired outcomes, collaborating to achieve them, and reflecting on the success of these efforts. #Safeguarding #MSP #SocialWork #QualityOfLife #Wellbeing #ProfessionalDevelopment

A big thank you to Peter Reynolds, Mike Cosman and NZ Disability Support Network for hosting their CEO/Director series on Health and Safety. Such an important topic amongst some very difficult challenges being faced by the disability sector. Some great moments including discussions on: - Safety is not the absence of accidents but the presence of great systems and processes, educated people, the right equipment and an embedded culture of health and safety. - Balancing enabling good lives, privacy, self-determination and health & safety is not clear cut and can conflict with each other. - Good governance involves getting your nose in and asking questions (while supporting your people to get on with the mahi). - "Taken as read" is not a good board minute for H&S.

Look, Listen, Ask: developing professional curiosity. Safeguarding adults is vital in all industries and in the community. Everyone has a role in safeguarding. Use today to reflect on how you can contribute to safeguarding adults within your organisation or community. Professional curiosity is about looking, listening, asking direct questions and reflecting on all the information received. It's where a practitioner proactively recognises and asks questions to try to understand what is happening within a particular institution, family or for an individual, rather than making assumptions or taking a single source of information and accepting it at face value. To achieve safer cultures and communities, practitioners and members of the community should be professionally curious. You can support this theme today by sharing resources about what professional curiosity means in your sector or role. These reviews provide invaluable insights into the complexities of adult safeguarding and the systemic changes needed to protect vulnerable individuals. In the UK, we've seen several instances where failures in communication, collaboration, and understanding have led to tragic outcomes. Each review highlights crucial areas for improvement, yet we must ask ourselves: Are we truly taking these lessons to heart? 🌟 **Key Questions to Consider:** 1. Are we ensuring that multi-agency collaboration is effective and that all voices are heard? 2. How are we integrating the findings from SARs into our training and development programs? 3. Are we fostering a culture of openness where staff feel empowered to raise concerns and share insights? As we move forward, let's commit to actively implementing the lessons learned, enhancing our practices, and ultimately ensuring that safeguarding adults remains a priority in our work. Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility and we work with our support providers to ensure that the right level of support is delivered to our tenants via person-centred care. Person-centred care focuses on the needs of the individual. People's preferences and needs should guide decisions, and care should be provided that is respectful and tailored to the individual. One of our tenants, Alex, was involved with choices about his support at his home in South West London. Alex’s support worker involved him in making decisions about what he would like support with which includes cooking and planning meals, learning how to do housework, and with exercising in the gym. Co-production ensures our tenants are involved in decisions about their support, which increases their confidence and resilience, and crucially, their ability to disclose safeguarding concerns, according to Ann Craft Trust, the leading authority on safeguarding. Mental First Aid Officers MFAO After recently completing a certificate iv in Workplace, Health and Safety. I learnt how to think about safety differently and how to make improvements however minor they maybe. One of the topics I was assigned was Psychosocial Risks. So I though I would share a little what I learnt. In case any one was not aware an amendment was made to update the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 on 1 April 2023. This provided more clarify on what Psychosocial Risks is, the duties of a person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) and what to consider in implementing controls. Many state Safety authorities have developed Code of Practice and in my home state of Queensland you can find a copy from https://lnkd.in/gAt4f3iX Many work places are now recognising Psychosocial Hazards and introducing Mental Health First Aiders (MHFA). However many MFAO are not compensated for these skills/services which in some areas of the workplace may be used more often then General first aid in which most workplace provides an allowance. Next time you review your Enterprise Bargining Agreement or Safety policy/procedure think about the MHFA. Maybe even speak with your training providers to see if they offer a combined Provide First Aid and Mental First Aid Course. Stats from Safe Work Australia also indication Mental health conditions had an 50% increase in proportion of serious claim from 2014-15 and in 2020-21 accounted for 9.3% of serious claims in 20-21 with a median time lost of 30.7 working weeks per and approx $55K per serious claim vs 6.2 working weeks and approx $14K for physical injuries and diseases. https://lnkd.in/g7mdrmyW Additional info https://lnkd.in/gJa3kf_e
