Solar hybrid power generators and battery storage units are being trialled across our sites as part of our drive to reduce carbon emissions. These alternative power solutions use sunlight as a power source via an array of solar photovoltaic panels or utilise electricity stored in a battery, reducing the reliance on fossil fuels for sites which are unable to connect to the grid. From April to November 2024, 16 sites have utilised one of these alternative power solutions, and over 150,000 litres of fuel has been saved as a result. This equates to a saving of more than 470 tCO2e – the equivalent of travelling more than 1.6 million miles in an average diesel car. The initiative forms part of our Even Greener strategy as we take steps across the business to reduce our emissions year-on-year. #carbonreduction #EvenGreener

One Month with Solar Panels A bit late to the party but I installed solar panels at home one month ago. I’m thrilled to share that the system generated an impressive 2.2MW of electricity and returned 1.5MW of electricity back to the grid. This isn’t just about energy production or cost savings; it’s about making a positive impact on the environment. The impact a single house can make is positive. We produced CO2 savings of 1.6 tonnes, which is broadly equivalent to planting 27 trees! Each day, I’m reminded of the tangible difference we can make by embracing sustainable energy solutions. We continued to draw on the grid for baseload power, but we took about 2/3rd of our power from solar and 1/3rd from the grid. Batteries still have some way to go to be economically viable but with innovation I am sure they will become more mainstream in time with higher storage capacity and lower cost. For those technically interested, we have 39 440w panels and 39 Enphase Microinverters.
