Towards better liveability!!! 🔔 Temperatures in urban areas are several degrees higher than in surrounding rural areas, and even hotter at night as there is lack of green and open spaces in cities with increased heat waste from air conditioners and concrete urban structures and hard road surfaces retain heat which is trapped inside this "urban Bubble" along with pollutants. This year again due to climate change, temperatures has risen in India with heat waves affecting the complete nation harming the vulnerable poor, infants and elderly. Thus we need to look forward to ways to mitigate urban heat island (UHI) issues with incorporating following planning practices: Increasing Green Cover - Urban forests, large greens, parks, etc. with well distribution of such green areas in the cities. It would also reduce air pollution moving towards "net zero" future. Increasing the use of green transportation/ non-motorised transportation with shaded tracks for pedestrians and cyclists. Densely populated Singapore has an astounding 47% area under green. UN Habitat has also recommended that Green Spaces shall be available within 400 meters from their residence. I am pleased to announce the publication of my latest article with Mattia Leone, which introduces a novel one-sided windcatcher design for outdoor applications. By combining traditional principles with modern sustainable features like green façades, curved shafts, and guide vanes, this work addresses the critical gap in using windcatchers to enhance outdoor urban spaces. The study employs iterative CFD simulations to optimize performance and examines key factors like curvature radius, inlet size, and urban morphology. Highlighting research gaps, it provides a roadmap for advancing windcatcher technology and encourages designers to adapt traditional designs to meet contemporary urban demands, considering the complexity of urban wind pattern. https://lnkd.in/gq4cdhf4
