The EPFL Space Center goes to Brussels to support the #PEFCR4Space definition! Launched by the European Commission DG DEFIS and co-chaired by VITO, PRé Sustainability, and Novaspace (Merger of Euroconsult & SpaceTec Partners), the Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCR) for the space sector are shaping the future of the European space market. The EPFL Space Center joined the Technical Secretariat (TS), collaborating with industry, academia, and agencies to define life cycle assessment (LCA) rules for space systems. Mathieu Udriot attended meetings in November and December, sharing EPFL's expertise on space sustainability and LCA, particularly in launch vehicle projects with ESA FLPP, academic partners, and ArianeGroup. This effort will help to keep Swiss researchers and industries up-to-date while contributing to a more sustainable space sector. We look forward to continuing in 2025! 🚀 Advancing Sustainability in Space 🌍 Yesterday, the members of the Technical Secretariat (TS) gathered for a second time in Brussels for a productive workshop. The discussions focused on refining the key elements of the Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCR) for the space sector, such as, the possible sub-categories, the key characteristics, and the draft functional units that will form the backbone of the final framework. The goal is to ensure that the framework will be as comprehensive and accurate as possible and the TS Chair and Co-Chair are set to finetune the proposed sub-categories and related parameters before Christmas, bringing us one step closer to the final PEFCR. 🌱 What’s Next? Starting in January 2025, dedicated working groups under the Technical Secretariat of the PEFCR for Space for each sub-category will be set up to focus on defining modelling rules, modelling Representative Products, and developing impact assessments. These critical steps will shape the future of sustainability in the space sector! 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eP36JhCF #PEFCR4Space #EUSpace #EnvironmentalFootprint A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the workshop! Your expertise and commitment are helping us build a more sustainable future for space. 🌍🚀

Interesting morning side event at the UN Ocean Decade conference. Technology and innovation showcase - a side event organised by the Schmidt Ocean Institute and supported by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST). The event consisted of a series of pitches and reverse pitches against a number of the ocean decade challenges by innovators. The reverse pitches talked about the need for technology innovation. Each pitch was limited to 3 minutes they were followed by a panel discussion The innovation pitches ranged from Fugro communicating how it is decarbonising its oceanic research shipping vessels, to the Ocean Data Network showcasing how it is leveraging fishing vessels for depth measurements to expand the global ocean observing network. The reverse pitches included Wildaid Marine Programme advocating for tech innovations in Marine Protected Area (MPA) enforcement, emphasising the need for accessibility, scalability, and practicality; to Ocean Visions seeking ocean based solutions to climate change and helping them with the four R's [Repair, Remove, Reduce, Reach] The panel discussion (including Ralph Rayner - IMarEST Fellow) emphasised the importance of innovation, funding, and data utilisation in addressing ocean challenges. Collaboration across sectors was highlighted as crucial for accelerating progress towards a sustainable blue economy - in particular the need to communicate to non- scientific communities, and the need to move more rapidly was also emphasised. #IMarEST #OceanDecade #Technology #Innovation 🌊🌏

Sharing some thoughts on our #hyphenated-discipline times (multi-, inter- and trans- disciplinary) and how PNAS Nexus helps advance #scientific and #technological research across all #disciplines, from #physical sciences and #engineering to #social sciences and to #biological sciences and #medicine. And with an insight on #sustainability and how we can use its Greek-word equivalent of αειφορία to #changetheconversation in a positive and forward looking way about it.
Yannis Yortsos, Editor-in-Chief of PNAS Nexus, reflects on the journal’s first two years of publishing multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary work supporting a forward-looking vision of sustainability he terms αειφορια—thriving and prosperity. In PNAS Nexus: https://ow.ly/kGqg50TZfqy

Exciting Recap Video!! Watch the highlights from our ribbon-cutting event for the Center For Innovation that happened on May 29th. From inspiring speeches to a glimpse of cutting-edge marine technology, this milestone marks a new era in ocean sustainability. The Center For Innovation, composed of Berths 58 through 60, is the largest research and development facility in the world dedicated to ocean solutions to climate change. As former warehouses, the large, open buildings have proved to be the ideal environment for various science and business partners to set up modular offices and custom labs. Check out the recap below and stay tuned for upcoming events that will be held there! #AltaSea #Innovation #OceanSustainability #SanPedro #BlueEconomy

With an increasing number of institutions focused on space sustainability, there are questions about how to ensure they work together effectively. Our panel, “Choose Your Own Adventure? How to Manage the Many Forums for Space Sustainability,” will discuss strategies for improving coordination among formal UN institutions, self-organized groups of States, national agencies, and private sector initiatives.

How should one promote Space Sustainability, beyond the issue of space debris? And what should be the target audience? I was enthousiastic after getting an invitation to be an expert at SG[France] 2024 in Lyon, the main event of #France's branch of the Space Generation Advisory Council. With this year's theme being Space Sustainability, there were three working groups, discussing topics of "sustainability of the space industries", "sustainability of space operations" and "space applications for global sustainability". The goal of each group is to provide recommendations for the space sector, which may eventually be brought up during a meeting at the #UnitedNations. As this is a #SGAC event, it has an excellent target audience for this topic! Indeed, the organisation focuses on young professionals (18 to 35 year old), but some more "experienced" people were present too. This is perfect as that is exactly the segment of engineers, lawyers, educators, etc which should be sensitised to this increasingly important issue! It was great to present in the first working group, lead a work table and discuss the environmental impacts of our sector. I learned a lot from the co-experts during the session: Rico Behlke highlighted the often-ignored impacts of the Ground Segments and the trends in regulations, and Julien Doche delved into the highly uncertain impacts of the launch segment. A big thanks to Thomas Bellier to organise the working group and to the delegates for coming up with novel recommendations! And, a more general thanks to all the organisers of the event. Also, it was fun to see a large representation of current and former colleagues at eSpace - EPFL Space Center, amongst who another expert Mathieu Udriot !
