🌿 Next weeks UN Biodiversity Conference (COP16) in Colombia will be a critical moment for our planet's future, as world leaders focus on how to protect life in all its diversity. But this cannot be achieved without the knowledge and leadership of Indigenous Peoples and local communities. I'll be attending with IIED, as we call for the 30x30 target (protecting 30% of land and sea by 2030), to be led by Indigenous Peoples and local communities, with protected and conserved areas that respects their rights and territories. IIED and our partners will be there to make sure the decisions made at #COP16 deliver real change — rooted in justice, equity, and sustainability. We will be working together to share our research, demonstrating the critical role Indigenous Peoples, local communities and smallholder farmers play as stewards of much of the world’s agrobiodiversity, and why they must be recognised as equal partners in reversing the loss of nature. Join us as we push for a future where nature thrives, and all voices are heard 👩🌾 🌎 👨🌾 🔔 Follow International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) for the inside track on COP16 📺 #Media, comment or DM for stories / quotes from COP16 #Biodiversity #IndigenousRights #ClimateAction

🌍 Progress and Key Outcomes from the First Week of COP16 in Cali 🌍 The first week of COP16 in Cali, Colombia, has been a mix of promising developments and persistent challenges. As Soluciones Estrategicas Sustentables, we have been closely monitoring key developments that could significantly impact our efforts to protect biodiversity and promote sustainable development. Highlights: 🍃 Significant progress has been made in the discussion on how to implement the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF), which is crucial to achieving biodiversity conservation and sustainable use goals. 🍃 Although only 18% of Parties have submitted their revised National Biodiversity Strategies and Actions (NBSAPs), there is positive momentum for more countries to commit before the end of the year. 🍃 The active participation of diverse communities, including parliamentarians, women, Indigenous peoples, and Afro-descendants, has generated a positive and engaged environment. Remaining challenges: 🍁 Divisions on how to mobilize financial resources between 2025 and 2030 remain a major obstacle. It is crucial that consensus is reached on the creation of a dedicated fund for the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in addition to the temporary GBF. 🍁Despite constructive talks, further efforts are still needed in building trust and coordination between nations to overcome existing divisions. COP16 remains a vital platform for sustainability organizations, like #SESSA, to influence the formulation of policies and strategies that promote a greener and more sustainable future. We are excited to see how the negotiations unfold in the second week and hope that we can achieve significant progress for global diversity. We keep continuing to inform. #COP16 | #Biodiversity | #SustainableNegotiations

From #COP16 to #COP29, our Senior Climate Finance Campaigner, Martyna Dominiak is headed to Baku to hold banks financing oil and gas expansion in the Amazon and continue to amplify the leadership of Amazonian Indigenous Peoples. At COP16, the Amazonia team witnessed historic advancements, including the creation of the Permanent Subsidiary Body on Article 8j. This body will ensure the participation of Indigenous Peoples and local communities in UN biodiversity decision-making processes, a significant step toward recognizing their roles in biodiversity conservation. Afrodescendant communities were also acknowledged as key biodiversity stewards—a long-overdue recognition. However, critical gaps remain. The exclusion of Indigenous Territories from the 30×30 conservation target, insufficient funding from wealthier nations, and a lack of accountability for illegal activities fueling deforestation undermine progress. Additionally, fossil fuel impacts were notably sidelined in negotiations. We commend Colombia’s bold integration of climate and biodiversity policies and Brazil’s leadership in advancing Indigenous rights at COP16. Yet, the urgent need for stronger global commitments remains. We look to the upcoming UN Climate Change Conferences – COP29 in Azerbaijan and COP30 in Brazil – to deliver transformative change, centring Indigenous voices and addressing the twin crises of biodiversity loss and climate change.

✨ Spotlight on #Focalimember Stephen Woroniecki at #COP16 Stephen Woroniecki - who are you? I am an environmental social scientist with a broad interest in how social sciences can be used to make conservation work for people and nature. In my capacity as a researcher, I address the social dimensions of climate change, biodiversity loss, and inequality. My current research deals with the potential of two 'Nature-based Solutions' (Urban community-based wetlands creation projects) to address these challenges in an integrated way. I increasingly use methods and approaches from the social science and humanities to ask questions about social power and people’s lived experience of environmental change and response. What will you focus on at COP16? At COP16, I will be working with a team of partners led by SwedBio on addressing human rights-based approaches into nature-based solutions and other integrated work on climate change and biodiversity. The multi-stakeholder dialogue process informs the CBD COP16 in Colombia, particularly the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework, as well as other related policy processes. My specific role involves plan stakeholder workshops, weaving different knowledge strands together, and facilitating the multistakeholder dialogue taking place adjacent to the CBD COP16. In addition, I will contribute to reporting back from COP16 and co-plan a post-COP16 analysis webinar with Focali and partners after COP16 as we did after COP15. Besides Focali related topics and collaborations I am covering issues related to my work at WWT and my involvement in IPBES Read more about Stephen here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dQgbhCTK Connect with him if you are at COP16! 🌍 Today marks the start of #COP16! 🌿 Did you know that the United Nations organise two major #COPs every year (“Conferences of the Parties”)? You’ve probably heard of COP focused on climate change, now approaching its 29th meeting. But there’s also a COP dedicated to biodiversity, #COP16 🌳🐝 Also kown as the Convention on Biological Diversity (#CBD), this week, COP16 kicks off in #Cali, #Colombia UN Biodiversity And just yesterday the UK announced Ruth Davis as the first envoy for nature as the "Special Representative for Nature" for COP16. Foreign Secretary David Lammy highlighted at the announcement that "We depend on nature in every aspect of our lives – it underpins our economy, health and society – and yet progress to restore our wildlife and habitats has been too slow. Ruth’s extensive knowledge and expertise will be vital to help us deliver on our commitments to put nature on the road to recovery.” 🌿 This year’s theme, Peace with Nature, brings nations together to discuss the #KunmingMontrealGlobalBiodiversityFramework (#GBF), a landmark plan agreed at #COP15 in 2022 aimed at halting and reversing biodiversity loss by 2030. At COP16, nations will: - Align their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (#NBSAPs) with the Kunming-Montreal Framework. - Strengthen monitoring frameworks for tracking progress. - Mobilize resources for successful implementation of biodiversity goals. Check out the logo above! It features an “Inírida” as the “eternal flower”, a plant with remarkable ability to withstand extreme weather and to survive both floods and spells of drought. The COP 16 emblem tells a story of resilience at a time when the world grapples with the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. Keep up with what's happening at COP16 here: Conference of the Parties (COP) (cbd.int) The actions of COP16 will set the stage for #COP29 in #Baku, #Azerbaijan next month, where global discussions will shift to #climate change. We came out of the #CBD #nature #COP16 in Cali with some great wins, but way too much work still to be done. As we are now transitioning into #UNFCCC #climate #COP29, this read offers a great overview over the state of affairs, things at stake, but also opportunities going forward in tackling the two interconnected global crises. Importantly, stepping up #finance from new sources and from transforming ‘perverse’ subsidies and incentives, and agreeing on #reporting to ensure accountability are interlinked and, if solved together, can build trust between the global South and North going forward. While only 22% of countries have delivered the promised #NBSAP - national biodiversity action plans to deøiver on the #GBF - these nations have a window now to devellop action-oriented and ambitious plans. This is potentially extremely impactful on the ground - more so than lofty but vague goals…. #hope #climatecrisis #naturecrisis

What is #COP16 and what are Sustainable Ocean Alliance young leaders up to on the ground? 🌎 Right now in Cali, Colombia, thousands of international delegates are gathered to discuss and negotiate global efforts to protect biodiversity under the UN Convention on Biodiversity (CBD). 🌿 Despite separate mandates, CBD and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (aka UNFCCC, which will convene next month for #COP29 in Azerbaijan) are highly complementary and can effectively collaborate. 🤝 🌊 Ocean-based solutions can support these synergies, weaving a ‘blue thread’ across national biodiversity and climate strategies. As an accredited organization, SOA is proud to support a delegation of 16 young ocean professionals to partake in these important discussions and decision-making processes. We know more than anything, young people are leading the urgency & equitable/just perspectives that are needed to address our polycrisis. Stay tuned for more updates to come from our on the ground delegation! 🎥 video created by SOA x ECOP Canada Hub Leader Laura Hernandez Merlano, featuring Sustainable Ocean Alliance Perú (SOA Perú) Hub President Stefanie Torres and SOA COSTA RICA Co-President and COP16 Delegation Lead Francisco Lara-Fletes.
