Brand developed concept shoot celebrating the rich legacy of my Belizean heritage, this reel showcases Mayan artistry through face painting and warrior aesthetics, a reflection of the sacred traditions of the ancient Mesoamerican world. As a son of the soil from Belize, a land once central to Mayan trade and ceremony, this is more than a design, it’s my history, my responsibility to honor and elevate these narratives in fashion. Through my Garifuna heritage, I am also deeply connected to the Indigenous Arawak and Carib tribes of the Caribbean, whose cultures intertwined with African resilience to form something truly unique. This lineage gives me the authority to make these cultural references not as appropriation, but as an authentic celebration of the interconnected histories of the Mayan, Caribbean, and Mesoamerican worlds. The 2025 Met Gala theme, ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,’ celebrates how culture and identity redefine fashion. Just as Black dandyism reshaped global style, @hyde.bz mission is to honor and amplify the voices of ancient and modern Indigenous cultures through luxury design. Before there was America, there was the ancient Mesoamerican world, and Belize was a sacred land within it. A vital hub of trade, it connected the Mayan world with materials like jade, obsidian, and ceramics, all crisscrossing the region. Yet, fashion remains predominantly Eurocentric, overlooking the grandeur and achievements of Indigenous peoples in the Western Hemisphere. It’s time to expand the concept of Americana to include not just North America but Central America, South America, and the Caribbean telling a fuller, more inclusive story.
