We are excited to announce a new awarded $47K grant for design and permitting of two micro-bioretention retrofits to treat impervious area runoff at the Giant Food/Bay Forest Shopping Center on Bay Ridge Rd. in #annapolismd. Micro-bioretention facilities capture and treat runoff from discrete #impervioussurfaces by passing it through a filter bed mixture of sand, soil, and organic matter. Filtered runoff then infiltrates into underlying soils. #Bioretention facilities are more robust than #raingardens and handle greater volumes of #stormwaterrunoff. This project is in the Back Creek subwatershed of the Severn River, and was originally identified in the Back Creek Action Plan put together by the Center for Watershed Protection. How do you handle stormwater management in a space-challenged development? Here's how we tackled this with Aquacomb.  The problem: This new development in Glen Eden needed a stormwater detention and retention system due to its location in a stormwater management area (SMAF) zone. With engineered concrete, varied heights, and tight spaces, traditional tanks just wouldn’t cut it. The solution: Using the flexibility of the Aquacomb system, we tailored solutions for each of the 26 lots. From in-slab 250L pods to double-stacked 350L pods, we maximised every inch of space—even under decks when necessary. With meticulous planning and close coordination, we met all requirements and kept the solution hidden. Gift article for my connections. I often point to the Ontario Excess Soils Regulation as a classic example where changing the rules made the sustainable choice the profitable choice. However, enforcement is key. At Lafarge Canada we have invested heavily in internal controls to manage the soils that we conserve in our quarries through rehabilitation.
