Some insights from an info session at COP29, namely the perceived stagnation of the mobility transition and how to catalyze it. We present a brief perspective to the insights presented, highlighting the role Africa plays in this transition. Key Points: Urgent Need for Transition: Mobility accounts for 30% of global GHG emissions, with road transport as the main contributor. Economic Opportunity: The mobility sector is ripe for disruption in the next five years, especially as China shows a promising shift with over 50% of car sales being electric. Challenges to Overcome: 29% of BEV drivers express concern about switching back to ICE cars due to inadequate charging infrastructure and total cost of ownership. In the U.S., charging station downtime is nearly 25%. Investment in Innovation: $850 billion has been invested in ACES (Autonomous, Connected, Electrical, and Shared) vehicles, signaling a major shift in mobility. Africa’s Pivotal Role: African economies are central to developing battery infrastructure, essential for meeting global sustainability goals in the coming years. 🌍 Last week, I had the privilege to share some thoughts about the importance of integrating sustainability in the business review processes during the Sustainability Leaders' Dinner hosted by Alstone in Brussels.   💡 some key highlights and future opportunities from the event:   🔋  @Manuel Smolders  from Brenmiller Energy Europe showcased their innovative solution for decarbonizing heat through thermal energy storage (with a 4 GWh manufacturing capacity). This is a significant step forward in sustainable energy. 🤖 Iraia Ibarzabal from  Multiverse Computing introduced an AI Model Compressor that reduces AI model size while maintaining performance, leading to lower energy consumption and costs. A crucial development for sustainable tech. 🌿 Renée Smits –COP28 UAE speaker and rainforest advocate, provided valuable insights into environmental advocacy. 🚀 @Stéphane Ouaki 🇺🇦🇪🇺 – Head of Department, European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA) presented exciting opportunities for innovation and support for SMEs in the sustainability sector. 🌍 At SAFICO, our role extends to catering to the needs of traditional and nascent industries, towards the push for a greener, sustainable and robust world. Zooming in on the Southern African region, the potential to catalyze a transition to cleaner and more sustainable mobility is an interesting case.   We've been attending some compelling online sessions from the COP29 conference in Azerbaijan, where experts discussed critical insights into the mobility sector. With mobility contributing 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and the road transport sector being the primary source, it is clear that the upcoming transition toward clean mobility is an urgent necessity.   Key takeaways from the session highlighted the significant disruption poised to occur in the mobility industry within the next five years. For context, more than half of all cars sold in China are now electric, signifying a promising shift that could influence the African market, especially considering the region's increasing import of low-carbon vehicles.   However, challenges remain. Notably, 29% of battery-electric vehicle (BEV) drivers express the risk of switching back to internal combustion engine (ICE) cars due to poor charging infrastructure and total cost of ownership concerns. In the U.S., for instance, the reliability of charging stations shows a troubling downtime of nearly 25%. Yet, with $850 billion invested in the next frontier of autonomous, connected, electrical, and shared (ACES) vehicles, we see a clear path forward as battery costs continue to decrease—by 10 times over the last 15 years.   From our perspective, African economies hold the key to accelerating the clean mobility transition. As we develop the necessary battery infrastructure over the next 15 years, we must prioritize the establishment of robust industries—such as original equipment manufacturers (OEMs)—to scale operations while incorporating sustainable supply chains to decarbonize at source.   Crucially, fostering partnerships will be essential for a just and successful transition to green transportation. This is where our expertise in forming sustainable synergies comes into play. As #transport, #logistics and #supplychain are interlinked, the impact for #TheNetherlands as #Gateway to #Europe is immense. Decarbonization of these sectors is necessary but not easy, looking at #products, #fuels or even #costs and #investments involved. Maybe some answers will be popping up, as until now the strategies have been diffuse and a bit choppy.
