Despite wind and solar power, many IoT applications are still held back by the lack of a sustainable energy supply. The use of otherwise wasted heat from microelectronics as a source of electricity is one possible solution. However, the efficiency of current thermoelectric energy conversion is insufficient. Now, a team led by Osaka University has succeeded in quadrupling the power obtained from conventional thermoelectric conversion with a two dimensional electron gas system that uses gallium arsenide. The breakthrough promises clean, sustainable power for IoT applications ranging from environmental monitoring systems to wearable medical devices. #IoT
Researchers have improved the efficiency of heat-to-electricity conversion in gallium arsenide semiconductor microstructures. By judicious spatial alignment of electrons within a two-dimensional electron gas system with multiple subbands, one can substant
