As part of our ongoing series #CurrENTTechTuesdays, we are showcasing the innovative grid technologies that we based our study with Compass Lexecon and supported by Breakthrough Energy , ‘Prospects for Innovative Power Grid Technologies’. There is a massive need for grid expansion, with a 20 – 50% increase at the TSO level required by 2040 according to the projections in the study. This week's technology in the spotlight is #AdvancedPowerFlowControl Advanced Power Flow Control solutions redirect power from overloaded lines to underutilized lines, which can solve problems of grid bottlenecks and create extra grid capacity. Advanced Power Flow Control solutions allow system operators to dynamically control the power flow of certain lines or parts of a transmission network, like road traffic management, hence adapting flows to local constraints and unlocking additional grid capacity. What are the key benefits of APFC? ⚡ APFC solutions allow for a quick reaction when congestion appears 💡 APFC solutions can create extra grid capacity on existing infrastructure 🔌 The modular design of APFC systems allows for quick installation, as well as being able to move units in case of changing system needs All information in this post comes from Compass Lexecon’s study, supported by Breakthrough Energy , ‘Prospects for Innovative Power Grid Technologies’: https://lnkd.in/dkiaW9vz Smart Wires Inc.

After an incredibly crazy week, I am so excited that our last GRIP announcement of the year is here! We're doing so much in GRIP this year across #transmission system capacity, #energyresilience, and now one of my personal favorite topics, #gridmodernization. And there is so much here to share! Those who have worked with me know that while I'm fascinated by the complex regulatory and policy questions that shape the energy sector ("how do we handle cost allocation for proactive grid upgrades?"), I really love working on the prosaic, everyday issues that can also slow us down -- things like "interconnection applications have to get passed between 35 different people in emails and sometimes they get lost". But that is not the only problem that our $49.5M in funding to GridUnity will solve! This project will also bring machine learning tools to bear on the interconnection process, improve transparency for all stakeholders, and decrease queue duration times for individual projects by over a year! This cohort also has the most transportation electrification exposure I've had since coming to DOE -- really pushing the grid interactivity of EVs with Consumers Energy, Otter Tail Power Company, and Highland Electric Fleets. And of course we have some fantastic energy storage and DER work that isn't on wheels! We'll work with Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) on integrating a VPP with distribution automation and FLISR, and Baltimore Gas and Electric on going beyond the substation to integrate batteries into their full distribution grid. Continuing our funding of best-in-class microgrid approaches, Ameresco will construct a front-of-meter microgrid that supports a US Navy base in Hawaii during outage events -- talk about a critical facility! Finally, as a former tech-to-market nerd it's also a delight to have cutting edge technology like VEIR working to interconnect a commercial solar farm and Southern California Edison (SCE)'s first solid state substation. As always, so proud of my team and so grateful to get to work on pushing so many topics critical to the energy sector forward. It takes an incredible amount of work and coordination to get these selections out the door and that's only possible because we're working with the best in the business -- many thanks to David Parsons Jessica Perry Kristen Frick Karin Haas Grace Weller Dylan Reed Katie Weeks Keith Dodrill Jeff Kooser Kari L. Skovira Kavita Vaidyanathan and so many others. Looking forward to updating soon on what we're seeing from GRIP grants out in the field!
TODAY: U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced nearly $2 billion for 38 projects that will protect the U.S. power grid against growing threats of extreme weather, lower costs for communities, and increase grid capacity to meet load growth stemming from an increase in manufacturing, data centers, and electrification. The selected projects through the Grid Deployment Office’s Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships (GRIP) program will deploy new, innovative transmission and distribution infrastructure and technology upgrades to bring reliable, affordable, clean energy to Americans. Congrats to the Tennessee Valley Authority & partners on a huge win! Alongside DOE, the coalition is executing $533M of grid projects to increase capacity, mitigate extreme weather risks, and accelerate development of clean energy. This includes thousands of megawatts of solar in TVA's interconnection queue and up to 800 MW of wind power via the FIRST interconnection between TVA and Southwest Power Pool. Resilient grid capacity is the KEY to unlocking the energy transition, enabling prosperity among high growth regions of the US, and mitigating the impacts of extreme weather events like hurricanes Helene and Milton. 📢 Read the full announcement: https://lnkd.in/ewBYgP5B 🌐 Read the TVA Press Release: https://lnkd.in/dgU3q54C 📰 NYT Article: Biden-Harris Administration Announces Additional $2 Billion to Protect Grid Against Growing Threats: https://lnkd.in/dcYczuVK
