Thank you for inviting me Zero Emissions Platform to share Northern Lights JV best practice and lessons learned on local support for CCS. Openness and transparency are at the core of our approach to stakeholder engagement. Summed-up I brought the following lessons learned to the table: 1. Choice of location: Look beyond the numbers for the excel sheet when choosing a location for your infrastructur. Does the project fit well into a community’s ambitions and plans? For us, Øygarden kommune and Mayor Tom Georg Indrevik has been of strategic importance. 2. Being able to, and prioritizing, receiving visitors on-site: Open and transparently share about one's activity and business to create better understanding of purpose. I am impressed with Sverre Overå and the Equinor TSP Team in Øygarden who continuously receive guests from all over the world. Over 9000 visiters have been to Øygarden from more than 52 countries. All, from the local school to industry emitters and politicians and ministers, are welcomed and being meet professionally. 3. Continuous, systematic and open dialogue with local stakeholders: Including politicians, administration and neighbours (private and business). Yes, maybe a bit obvious. But actually doing and prioritizing it is vital.

66 percent reduction! That is how much the Sønderborg area has succeeded in reducing our energy related CO2 emissions since 2007 – meaning we are two-thirds of the way towards our goal – a carbon neutral energy system in 2029! The result appears in our just published “Energy- and CO2 Report 2023”. 6 years to go, and we are on track according to our masterplan. From the very beginning, ProjectZero has been built on strong local collaboration as a public private partnership between Sønderborg Kommune and the Bitten & Mads Clausens Foundation – with dedicated citizens, companies, educational institutions and utility companies driving every success story. And the strong partnership is key for the achieving this great milestone – and for reaching our 2029 target.

How do we use animal waste to fuel a plane? How do we reduce the cost of an electric 18-wheeler? How do we transform industry to create clean shipping, green cement, and sustainable aviation fuel? These are the challenges the Bezos Earth Fund is addressing as we contribute to building infrastructure and scaling efforts for a clean economy. Through our partnership with RMI and Mission Possible Partnership, we are achieving remarkable progress in the industry. Our vision isn't about compromising transportation for sustainability—it's about innovating together to build a cleaner future that we all want to live in. Yes I missed the Northern Lights, so I aimed for our North Star! Ok so like so many of us last week, I woke up to see all my socials full of amazing Northern Lights photos and couldn't believe I missed them. But the Northern lights reminded me we needed to set our North Star for ESME and started me thinking about the concept of guidance and direction, not just in a personal sense, but in our professional and collective journey as well. I know that in the world of business we need a guiding light. So we have started to define our North Star, and I am keen to hear feedback and thoughts from others who have done this for their business and how it has aligned thinking, engaged teams and created a sense of purpose for your business. Our North Star needs to encapsulate much of our thinking; to encourage everyone to reduce their carbon footprint, to make better use of renewable energy by storing it efficiently, to remove the peak energy requirements that have to be met with dirty gas fired power stations, to make the solution affordable and in reach of all home owners to engage with everyone and share the benefits We want a clear, guiding principle that directs our efforts and aligns our actions with the much larger purpose. When I think about the widespread adoption of recycling, it started with a few committed individuals and organisations, but as the importance of sustainability became clearer, more people and companies joined in. Today, recycling is a common practice that contributes significantly to environmental conservation. At ESME I would like to think storing cheap, green, energy could be as commonplace. So whilst I now think about how I could travel, sustainably of course, to see the Northern Lights, I will work on our North Star and see where this journey is going to take us.

Did you know we've been working with Ecologi since January 2023 to help us with our carbon offsetting? 🌱 Carbon offsetting is the process of compensating for the carbon emissions you produce from industrial or human activities, such as the running of our HGVs. We finance projects which are designed to make the equivalent reductions in carbon in exchange for carbon credits. Ecologi is an environmental organisation, a platform for real climate action. They facilitate the funding of carbon offset projects and tree planting around the world and help businesses take responsibility.
