What is the optimal range for an EV The EV passenger car segment has a sort of competition for the highest range. Is it what the customers need?. Higher range means a bigger battery and height EV cost initially as well as for replacement years down the road. Many journeys are below 50 kms (90%), majority are below 100kms(99%), the rest are longer and can be any range as it’s for business or pleasure. Also 90% of mos EV users fit this profile and 10 % don’t and regularly drive long distances. Suppose your EV can with a 150 km range fixed battery and a provision to add a swappable battery pack that extended the range to 600 kms. The auto manufacturers could precharge you say 1/10 the cost of the swaplable battery up front too. Its a win win ! “Better place” in 2007 and “ample” -2024 have shown the swapablebattery can be changed in 5 mins. This being the case you could have swapping stations at service stations and extend your range indefinitely. Those that permanently want a higher range can choose that option and own their swapable battery. What do you think of that!

Another EV, another week of charging successfully only at home via Level 1. I just spent time testing Nissan Motor Corporation's 2024 Ariya Platinum+ e-4ORCE. In a curious continuous bid to try and learn what it's really like to live with an EV sans upgrading to a pricier at-home Level 2 charging setup...I again was able to accomplish all of my normal routine daily/weekly driving needs with the Ariya Platinum+ e-4ORCE by *exclusively* plugging it into my garage's basic 120v outlet whenever parked and not in use. I never over the course of the 256 miles I drove, visited a public Level 2 or Level 3 DC fast-charging station. The behavior of keeping an EV "topped up" (as one of my followers on BlueSky called it) is just so easy...anytime I'd get back home from a trip whether brief or a few hours away, I just picked up the included Level 1 charging cord and plugged it in. Repeat, repeat, repeat. While this particular Ariya spec uses a larger 87 kWh battery compared to that in the 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric Limited (64.8 kWh) I also recently charged only via Level 1, I was able to recover about 4 miles of range per hour at a slow ~1.2 kW trickle. For example, I once let the Ariya sit for a 24-hour window, starting at 54% SOC/156 miles and ending at 82% SOC/242 miles. This recap certainly isn't intended to brag or boast, rather serve as another reminder that *some* consumers (dependent on their usage case, climate, and driving needs) likely can get by charging an EV only using a common 120v outlet without the need to invest in a costlier at-home Level 2 charger. This is a conversation we should be having with consumers who may be on the fence about buying an EV yet remain concerned about not having the right equipment at home to charge. Also for real-world efficiency numbers, I averaged 2.9 mi/kWh after 256 miles.

MotorMoments Ian Lynas an EV journey with Kia How time flies past, ten years ago, Frozen was trending at the box-office, Pharrell Williams’ ‘Happy’ rang out across radios worldwide, and social media was awash with ALS ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ videos. Kia also commenced UK sales of the first-generation Soul EV on 11 November 2014, marking the brand’s first step into the EV market. Kia has evolved from an emerging player in the EV market to a pioneer in the UK’s zero-emission journey. Starting with the groundbreaking EV6 in 2021, Kia now plans to offer nine fully electric models in the UK by 2027. The brand currently offers four cutting-edge EVs to UK customers (Niro EV, EV3, EV6 and EV9), which will be joined by a variety of other models over the next few years.

Kia hopes the new EV3 will be a game-changer with a ‘bumpy road’ for EV sales in Europe After topping Hyundai in European sales last year, Kia expects a “bumpy trajectory of EV sales” in Europe. A part of this is due to its new EV3, launched in Korea last month for just over $30,000. Once it lands in Europe, Kia expects the low-cost EV3 to boost its market share in the region. https://lnkd.in/gXy7afw9
