Hyphae is heading to Corpus Christi for Air & Waste Management Association Ports of Entry Conference (9/30-10/1). Presenters will be sharing solutions that are shaping the future of sustainable freight transportation. They’ll dive into air quality, noise reduction, climate change, and sustainability with global experts from ports, industry, government, and academia. Hyphae Project Manager, Mei Visco, will present ‘Prescott Greening: Mitigating Particulate Pollution with Green Infrastructure’ highlighting how green infrastructure is helping to mitigate particulate pollution in West Oakland. www.adaptoakland.org Hyphae is serving as the technical lead for the Prescott project, which builds on nearly a decade of research and planning for greening efforts in West Oakland. We are working alongside our longtime partner, the West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project, with support from the City of Oakland and the Port of Oakland. The project is funded by the Alameda County Transportation Commission and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, our county and regional transportation agencies. A big thank you to everyone involved for their excellent collaboration! Environmental modeling will help predict and optimize the impact of vegetation, such as buffers, in reducing pollution levels in key areas. This approach will guide interventions along the freeway adjacent to the Prescott neighborhood, the heavily trafficked frontage road, and the intersection of 7th Street and the frontage road. It is a fact – beach clean-ups matter! A Norwegian research study in 2021, confirms beach clean-ups dramatically reduce microplastics released into the environment. Just read this piece about a landfill in New York contaminating water sources here in New Jersey. It’s a big problem that could have long-term effects on our drinking water and environment. As someone who’s been working in wastewater for years, I know how important it is to keep things like this in check before they get out of hand. It’s a good reminder that what happens upstream doesn’t stay there. We need to pay attention to how waste is managed across state lines, and make sure we’re protecting our water—because once it’s contaminated, fixing it is a lot harder and more expensive than preventing it in the first place.
