EVENT SECURITY
This is an example of how to secure your event. Multiagency coordination on intelligence and operations leads to a thwarted plot and no one being harmed.

“If we can get a man on the moon, why can’t we get a ramp on the stage?” - Paul Nunami
The first step is removing the attitudinal barriers that have prevented many in classical music and opera from recognising and removing this barrier. Yes, it means investment and brings particular challenges for historic buildings, but
“If we can get a man on the moon…”
And, yes, the sector is struggling with funding.
But 24% of the UK population is disabled, according to government statistics: https://lnkd.in/ebB3bZX3
That’s 16.1 million people with a lot of spending power.
So if we had better representation of disabled people on stage, new audiences are likely to come in and be encouraged to participate fully in the arts.
“I didn’t think opera was for me, but now I want to go” - Deaf audience member at formidAbility‘s 2024 #SongInSign UK tour.
Rather than thinking of disabled people as a problem to be solved and leaving us in the too-hard-basket, I’m suggesting the industry thinks of us as part of the solution.

Attended a panel on International Producing put on by The Broadway League. Got to learn hot tips on producing shows all over the world, and also what international audiences want when they come here!
Some takeaways I wrote down:
✅ When marketing your show overseas, just because it’s the same show, doesn’t mean it’s the same strategy.
✅ Research is essential before you enter the market to learn what that audience knows about your brand.
✅ Lucky enough to have multiple productions around the world? Make connections across those productions to create economies.
✅ Being a Tony Award Winning Musical isn’t enough to guarantee international success. And vice versa! (Dance of the Vampires is HUGE in Germany!)
And a few tidbits about our international audience here in NY:
👉 The tourist audience is about 97% back from 2019 levels!
👉 NYC is the #1 destination for younger audiences overseas.
👉 That younger audience gets recommendations from LOCALS when they are deciding what to see (and probably young locals)
👉 The international traveler has money to spend, and they want an experience.

Famous early Elvis Presley recordings, 'All Shook Up,' 'Don't Be Cruel' and 'Return to Sender' were all written by African American musician Otis Blackwell and almost identically sung to how Blackwell had on his demonstration recordings. It’s obvious when you listen to the legendary R&B great, Roy Hamilton who the King of RocknRoll admired that Elvis Presley borrowed much of his vocal style from Hamilton.
Listen to them both and you be the judge. Take a listen on YouTube. Why it’s obvious that Elvis Presley obtained his dancing style and vocal acumen from African Americans, the majority of people in the White community doesn’t give credit to the originators. Moreover, the Black originators were not compensated for their early input to RocknRoll. Many Black artists didn’t own the rights to their publishing and they signed bad record deals.
As with many business dealings over the last century, it may come as no surprise to learn that the mafia has had its hands in the music industry. Several dodgy characters, particularly in the Italian and Jewish mobs, have played a hand in the development of musical ventures.
The music industry was of great interest to the mob for several reasons. For starters, for a large part of the 20th century, many transactions were made in cash, including jukebox takings, drink sales at venues, artist revenue and vinyl sales.
So too, was the music industry a perpetually moving industry, with constant new releases hitting the shelves. This meant that there was always money to be made. Music was also a central focus at many mafia-owned enterprises, such as nightclubs and bars. However, now that much of the music industry has become digitalised and the influence of the mafia on contemporary business has waned, the mob has largely left the industry. Some have also argued that the belief that the mafia controlled the music business is overstated.
Jerry Wexler of Atlantic records said: “The mafia would like to control the record industry, but they have never managed to. They’re just on the fringes: selling cut-out records, pressing, independent promotion.”
Just because they don’t control it doesn’t mean the mob has no past influence in the music industry. Organized crime influence explains why many artists have been “ripped off.”
Today’s *Musical Minute* serves as a reflection of the global events currently portrayed in the media. It invites us to consider a fundamental question: What is happening in the world today? More crucially, what solutions can we pursue in response to these challenges? The composition is characterised by a complex layering of contrasting elements, mirroring the tension and uncertainty of our times. What revelations might follow? What is your perspective on these developments?

Another great new on sale coming up…
Grayson Perry: Are You Good?
Wednesday 12 November 2025
📌Tickets on general sale Friday 22 November at 10am
Are You Good? A question that I think is fundamental to our humanity. In this show, I will be helping you, the audience, find out if you really are thoroughly good or maybe quite evil, but in a fun way.
I always start out with the assumption that people are born good and then life happens. So, let’s pullback the curtain and see where your morals truly lie. Are you as virtuous as you think? With lots of audience participation (don’t worry, no one leaves unscathed) and a few silly songs we’ll have an entertaining evening and come out with our core values completely in tatters. Is it more important to be good or to be right?
It’s time to update what is a virtue and what is a sin. No biggie.
