Opportunity means a lot to those who don’t have access to it & NOT to those who already have access to plenty of opportunities. Regardless of the reasons of not having access to opportunity — whether that’s due to background, socioeconomic status or being from a marginalised community — equity is about providing additional support to those who don't normally get it 🤝 You’ll often see people thriving in roles across broadcasting, sports, music, film and even our industry and large proportion in those high profile, high paying, or leadership roles who have come from privileged backgrounds and have naturally had the network and opportunities handed to them. I’m mostly referring to those who benefit off the back of nepotism, elite schools or trust funds that open doors… it happens MUCH more than we realise - check out what schools/universities most of the UK’s most famous and high paying actors went to. And I’m saying this to be bitter or bitchy- its currently a fact of life that IMO (in my opinion) needs looking at.. We need to ask how diversity is represented on our screens, airwaves, workplaces, boardrooms, in literature and our industry. And how are they being portrayed and compensated?   On Wednesday 26th June at Alsager School, our #InspiredFutures team hosted the Year 10 #Careers Focus Day.  The motivational talk at the start of the day was delivered by our keynote speaker Grant Speed, Managing Director of Odgers Interim, an international executive recruitment company.  Grant re-iterated the importance of having a positive digital footprint, planning for your future and being #resilient & #persistent, if and when, challenges or rejection arise. The students were able to choose 4 different sessions to take part in on the day which were led by post-16/18 education providers, employers, and alumni from a wide range of industries including representatives from: NHS, STRATEGI SOLUTIONS GROUP LIMITED, LLS, RSM, Staffordshire University, Lench Building Group, Cheshire Police, Arnold Clark, RSPCA, Newcastle College (Newcastle Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG), Boyco (Digital Marketing & Media), Balfour Beatty, Barclays UK and the Army.  School staff, who are experts in their field, also ran sessions on careers in Psychology, and Law alongside Barristers from 7 Harrington Street Chambers in which students were given the opportunity to participate in a ‘mock trial’. In addition, Keele University ran a session on university life and the DWP & ASK Apprenticeship teams supported students on exploring #apprenticeship opportunities.     After all the planning and effort put into the day, we would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone involved in helping us make this an #inspiring careers day. Steve Jobs said “The only way to do great work is to love what you do.” As #CareersLeaders - it is essential we support our students on their careers journey by providing the necessary information, guidance and aspirational opportunities so all young people can find a job which they love! Already we are evaluating the day so that we can make it even better and more relevant to the students next year. Finding passion. The ECU College of Business Networking event is always a way to give back, or to rephrase it, to give forward. Faculty is always welcoming, thankful and gracious. Met some fine young folk. My primary goal is to first help young folks tell me their passion- even if I have to drag it out of them. They seem confused, guarded when asked, but eventually they break with an exhale and smile as I thank them for their honesty. One bright student told me, almost giddy in his delivery, music was his passion. Another student who had an excellent GPA, great personality, carried themselves well, the total package and future CEO type, told me -wait for it! HER passion was fishing!! I was over the moon. So I asked the “music man” and “fisherwoman” if they considered seeking jobs or internship at corporations that served up their passion to others? And don’t take no for an answer dang it. I think, I hope, I saw a twinkle in their eye. My parting shot to them was to be successful, feed your passion, embrace it unapologetically, and surround themselves with those who share your passion, the rest will take care of itself-at least that’s what credit union folks do. After chatting with 900 students, I was definitely in need of a quiet moment and a cup of tea to recharge and mostly reflect on the day (as I always do)! 😅 Olena did absolutely brilliantly with engaging students and sharing her own experience as a student, undertaking a placement year with GA. We visited St. Benedict's Catholic College and met a diverse group of enthusiastic and engaging students. They came prepared with questions about career pathways in the railway industry, average salary expectations, and the grades needed to succeed and progress. There are a few things I continued to mention throughout the day when asked about progression within the company and how to get to the top. Thank you to Katy, GA People Director’s, inspiring presentation at the recent GA Careers event. I reiterated the message about the squiggly career path. If you don't know what it is, please do check out Ted Talk: "Why squiggly careers are better for everyone". I kept emphasising the importance of exploring and continuing to learn and develop through career opportunities that they may not have even heard of or considered before. This will allow for more learning and growth through a squiggly career path. When talking about grades, my message was about grades being a factor if you choose an academic route after GCSEs. However, I wanted to make sure that children are aware that they all have something to offer. Quite often, it is more about an individual's ability and eagerness to learn new skills, and less about the grades…they just don't know it yet. Everyone creates their pathway if they are given opportunities. I know it, my squiggly career journey took me from being an au pair to retail management and finally to HR where I've met my mentors (Gavin Dunn FCIPD and Dawn thank you!) who helped me to shape and find my passion for working with people, making a difference, and to support young people's first steps into their career journey through Early Careers programmes and Apprenticeship opportunities. The best part of what I do is seeing those early stages of learning, personal development and professional growth. Like wise sages, career advisors offered one-on-one coaching, tailored guidance, and invaluable insights, ensuring that each individual's journey was as unique as the stars in the sky. And so, as the story drew to a close, the halls of Zurich Elite Business School echoed with the whispers of success.
