Top advice for building a successful corporate career...
As a junior buyer, I got a LOT of advice. 99% of it was a waste of time. But this one piece of advice changed my career: “Choose your boss, over your job title or your company” When I started out at the Co-op, I had an awesome boss who - made work fun - set clear expectations - valued my perspective - prioritised my time over his - led by permission not authority - believed in me even when I didn't - said ‘well done’ and ‘thank you’ often Company culture, job titles, salaries, they're not unimportant. But there's only one factor that's really going to accelerate your career... The person who should want you to succeed the most.

Category managers - do you know what your assistant buyer is thinking? A motivated assistant buyer can drastically improve your category performance... but only if you let them. 3 simple questions you can ask: - How are you (really)? - Where do you want to go (in your career)? - How can I help you get there? Listen to their responses and be ready to give them responsibility over the parts of your category that make sense for the business, match with their skillset, and poise them for growth. Investing in your own buying team is an underrated way to beat your comp sales next year.

How do I decide what product to bring into Atlas? GREAT QUESTION. Selecting new inventory for Atlas is no simple task. It's a process (to say the least) and one that I'm happy to share about! I review tons of product samples. From fabrics to charger plates to glassware, flatware, dinnerware, and more, a lot of potential rentals cross my path! I ask myself the following questions while reviewing potential products: ⭐ What are the current trends and what are upcoming trends? ⭐ What will clients love? ⭐ What do I love? ⭐ What will our various markets love? For example, our Miami market may love a style that is quite different from our Palm Beach market. ⭐ What makes sense with our current inventory? ⭐ What will make us money? We want to have inventory that is loved by clients and ultimately moves from the shelves! Combine all of these factors (easier said than done!) and we have our formula for how we decide on new products for our rental inventory. Questions about selecting inventory? Ask me in the comments!

STRATEGIC PROCUREMENT !! The other day, my mother took me to a jewelry shop - GRT . She selected a piece of necklace, declared to the salesman that she wanted to buy only this piece (SINGLE SOURCE). She turned to me and said, “It’s your turn to finalize the deal.” She believes, as a procurement Guy by profession, I can negotiate better in a jewelry shop as well. I failed miserably (LIMITED LEVERAGE). Gold prices are rising (FIXED MATERIAL COST), and they are fixed. The only leverage you have is over the making charges. I negotiated from 25% to 20% and then finally to 18% She was disappointed. “You cannot negotiate. What do you do in the office?” I needed to explain to her, “I do not do cheap bargaining. As part of my job, I decide what to buy, when to buy, where to buy, and how to buy.” Do you do strategic procurement or cheap bargaining?

Procurement Dave (ahem) walks into his stakeholder (S/h) meeting S/h - Dave, we got a problem with those new and cool looking laptop bags. D - They are rather nice, thinking of getting one myself. S/h - Our sales team gave us feedback, they can't carry any water bottles in the bag. There's no room!! We got to keep the sales guys hydrated when they are flitting around the city. D - OK, what are the non negotiables for an alternative water bottle. S/h - Must be able to carry 750ml, have a proven no drip cap and robust in design. Oh, and ideally made from recycled products. D - OK, let me look at the specs for our carry bags and laptops and engage with the supplier market around a water bottle that suits our needs (* in comments). #peektalent #stakeholderengagement #procurementjobs #melbourne #sydney
