At large school board elections, as compared to by district/ward, elections result in candidates who win who are wealthier and more often whiter than the communities they serve. This connects to a number of issues, including housing segregation, implicit and explicit bias of voters, voter turnout (and suppression), and access to political networks and information. I encourage more communities who are cognizant of the (under)representation issues in local government offices to look at by district/ward or hybrid (including at-large and by district/ward) elections as viable electoral structures.
