To help journalists contextualize coverage of school board elections, we spotlight research on who votes in these elections, the role of teachers unions and how new board members can influence school segregation, funding and test scores.

At large school board elections, as compared to by district/ward, elections result in candidates who win who are wealthier and more often whiter than the communities they serve. This connects to a number of issues, including housing segregation, implicit and explicit bias of voters, voter turnout (and suppression), and access to political networks and information. I encourage more communities who are cognizant of the (under)representation issues in local government offices to look at by district/ward or hybrid (including at-large and by district/ward) elections as viable electoral structures.
