It’s that time of year…student observations to really get to know students for private school admissions. I did two this week! It’s really helpful for me to see the child in action both with academics and in the social-emotional arena to determine a great school fit for the individual. There are hundreds (probably thousands actually!) of schools in the DMV. No wonder families are confused about what schools to explore! And we know that a bad school fit can be a really, really terrible experience for students, especially those who have some extra sensitivities and needs. Summer schools: what are they and are they worth it? Summer schools are a major, if oft-misunderstood aspect of private secondary school applications. Come spring, come the moment for many parents to start looking at summer school enrolment for their children. These schools, which are run from the sites of many British independent schools while they are empty for the holidays (though not always by these schools – more on that later), are often seen as useful ways to introduce applicants to the institutions they may find themselves applying to later down the line. And the logic, at a glance, seems to hold up – after all, what harm could it possibly do to send your son or daughter to live in their intended school for a week or a fortnight of activities, academic and otherwise?
