Thinking of #accessibility in real life situation is looking at a person carrying a heavy luggage up the stairs and thinking that a staircase that is not designed to carry heavy luggage is the inconvenience. Until I thought of it from this angle, I always used to think having a heavy luggage is the problem and wouldn't think of putting that responsibility on the architecture when in fact - it actually belongs there. The same applies to people on wheelchair trying to board a bus - the responsibility lies with the designers of wheelchairs-to design it compatible to Indian lifestyle and the designers of the buses - to accommodate the entry of people on wheelchairs. Accessibility has mostly been an after-thought as the 'abled' design from their best consideration and hence leaving a lot of gaps for people who need accommodation. If the needs of people who are not typically 'abled' are not met- they end up not feeling belonged. Having high chairs in restaurants to accommodate the seating need of toddlers so that they can see what is on the table as much as a full-grown adult is a typical simple accommodation that would make a toddler feel belonged at the table. Accessibility and Accommodations are not an after-thought or a check-list but it is a bent of mind that is built into the system or the lifestyle. Another simple accommodation built inside the kitchen is when a person cooks the same food for two people where one is slightly more spicier and has more salt than another version of the same food cooked for someone else in the house who is recommended a bland diet. Can we still get furniture here by early August?? I have been in and around the furniture world for a long time, and every summer my phone rings. Frantic calls from administrators scrambling to get one more necessary classroom full of furniture, or a 100 unexpected tables and or chairs. One recent caller needed 1000 student desks...yep, 1000. Those calls always start with "can we?"
