Job applications need a serious reality check. Here's the bare minimum: "Upload Resume" "Submit" That's it. Full stop. Asking candidates to rewrite their resume into your application form? That is a waste of time. If you want to find good workers, read the resumes people send. It's not hard. Or invest in a good resume reader. Complicated job applications don't help you find better people. They just make good people not want to apply. Keep it simple. When you apply for a job and send in your resume, it has to pop immediately. “A resume is showcasing you in a 10-to-60-second format on paper,” says former Google and Nvidia recruiter and current HR consultant Stefanie Fackrell, who’s looked at “thousands” of resumes. Telling a compelling story and being as clear and concise as possible “is what’s going to win you in a sea” of other candidates, she says. This includes listing powerful accomplishments and keeping the resume to one-to-two pages, depending on the length of your career. There are also some red flags Fackrell advises people to avoid. Certain Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) allow hiring managers and recruiters to query the system for resumes within a radius of a zip code. By providing this info, you boost your chances of being selected while keeping your privacy intact. Full addresses are unnecessary and can make your resume look outdated. Keep it simple. Let's talk some more about the ATS (Applicant Tracking System)! ATS likes it when the data presented (your resume) is clean and easy to read. Don't use embedded pictures or .JPG in your resume, no tables or formatted columns. Not all ATS are the same, some will read your resume differently. Make sure you check that the system parses your resume correctly every time. Don't assume that because one ATS reads it one way, that the next one will read it the same. Make sure that you upload your resume in a .doc or a .docx format, don't use .PDF or .JPEG to upload your resume.
