As healthcare workers, we meet patients at some of the most vulnerable parts of their lives. They are most likely anxious, afraid, and in pain - a combination for an emotional rollercoaster. In the midst of it all, the patient’s perception is their reality - no matter if we agree with it or not. So how can we better understand our patients as humans, not just a diagnosis? Instead of being reactive, maybe we should change our perspective - “If you could stand in someone else’s shoes, see what they see, hear what they hear, and feel what they feel.
