Here is the deal. PR is NOT a unilateral deal. It’s a collaborative process where two parties, a client and a service provider, work together and achieve results together. #pr #publicrelations
🛑 DON’T: hire a PR agency if you can’t (or won’t) devote *internal resources* to the effort. DO: hire a PR agency when your exec team *prioritizes comms* as a key biz driver. 🌟 That’s it. That’s the whole post. This is the way ✊ #publicrelations #communications #techpr

Completely agree with this perspective! My journey in PR so far has spanned across multiple industries, and I've found that the core principles of PR are truly universal. Whether it's crafting compelling narratives or building strong media relationships, the skills we develop are adaptable and transferable across any field. When selecting a PR professional to join your team, it's crucial to look beyond just industry experience. Prioritizing attributes, such as those outlined by the author of the post, can make all the difference. These are the qualities that drive success and enable PR professionals to thrive in any environment!

PR is PR is PR. With very few exceptions, if you can successfully do PR/comms in one industry you can successfully do PR/comms in any industry. Over the years I’ve worked for clients in: Travel and hospitality Architecture and design B2B B2C Non profits Museums Associations Consumer packaged goods Government and quasi-government orgs Public companies Private companies Entertainment Marketing Tech Luxury Retail And more (even a jazz dance troupe) The principles are the same, and they are transferable. New media relationships can be made. So if you’re hiring a PR person or PR agency partner, prioritize things like: Chemistry fit Attitude Writing skills Work ethic Creativity Genuine interest in following news Tenacity Agility Strategic acumen Past success

I 100% resonate with this! A skilled communicator with deep experience can thrive in any industry. The core principles of PR remain the same—understanding your audience, crafting compelling narratives, and building strong relationships. While each industry has its nuances, a seasoned PR professional can adapt and succeed across the board. PR is PR, no matter the field.

"Traditional PR is Dead." I came across this manifesto the other day that actually kept me awake that night. It was one of those things that I thought damn, I wish I'd written that!! Here's why ⤵ The author is Lulu Cheng Meservey, ex Chief Comms at Activision Blizzard and Substack. And the whole thing is actually to announce the launch of her new strategic communications firm. What I love about it: - It's centred around the importance of the founder brand and founder-led content (PREACH 👏) - It critiques modern corporate communications' approach to sending out faceless press releases (which is anything but meaningful) - It points to the importance of claiming your narrative through your opinion leaders and putting in the work to tell it. Because relying on media middlemen is a thing of the past, and you should want to preserve your companies' uniqueness. Instead, it advocates for direct, founder-led storytelling (yes personal branding!!) "𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐮𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐠𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐚 𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞." Love it. Definitely aligns with something I've believed for years, and that is that the founder brand can't be ignored alongside the company brand.

Why do PR specialists leave the inhouse? At first glance, it seems logical that a PR person, having gained experience in an agency, eventually moves to the company's staff - the very ‘safe haven’. It's stability, a predictable schedule, deep immersion in working with one brand. But I have started to notice the opposite: experienced professionals are returning to agencies. What's driving them? I tried to find out for myself: 1️⃣ Variety of tasks. Working at an agency, PR professionals are exposed to projects from a variety of industries and scales. This is an opportunity to solve unique problems, try new approaches and maintain professional drive. For some professionals, working with one brand can become routine 2️⃣ Flexibility of work format. Agencies offer more flexible conditions: remote work, project work, clear KPIs. This allows you to balance your personal life and career. Companies often lack such flexibility 3️⃣ Fewer internal barriers. In a corporate environment, approvals and bureaucracy sometimes become an obstacle for quick problem solving. In an agency, processes are more transparent, allowing you to focus on what matters most - creativity and results 4️⃣ Focus on expertise. In agencies, professionalism comes to the forefront. The stronger the team, the more competitive the agency is. This motivates to develop and improve skills My observations suggest that companies are finding it harder to retain professionals in their PR departments. Perhaps the solution lies in more creative freedom, flexible processes and support for professional development 💬 How do you see this situation? What do you think could be the key factor in choosing between an agency and an inhouse?
