Last weekend was my first time attending the L'Attitude Conference, which attracted over 6,000 participants and offered robust programming across various industries, mostly focused on the state of Latinos in the US. My talk focused on the importance of transforming our educational system to ensure teaching promotes actual learning (mastery), rather than one that is time-bound while measuring the wrong things: performance through grades, which is not evidence of learning (and often hinders it). First generation college students make up 57% of college entrants in the US and their graduation rate is 44% --unacceptably low. Community colleges now make up almost half of all students entering college. While 80% of entrants aspire to earn a degree, less than 1 in 6 will succeed within 6 years. Debt is more likely than a degree for most first generation students. Meanwhile, university graduates are increasingly less prepared to obtain a job, with only 40% of them able to secure a position within their field of study, 25% lack basic numeracy skills, about 1 in 3 default on their debt within 12 years and only 1/10th of recruiters feel the degree is emblematic of the necessary skills or knowledge required for the roles available, which often go unfilled. Yet, the most common grade today in college is an A (which only 15% of people obtained in the early 1960's)....By the way, today's students earn A's studying half of what their peers had to study in the 1960's. Schooling is not about learning. I met wonderful leaders from organizations doing complementary work: ALPFA Inc - Association of Latino Professionals For America The Aspen Institute Education & Society Program Thirty Percent Coalition Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU). Successful people prefers a journey characterized by depth, excellence, and fulfillment, even if it means encountering limitations or boundaries along the way.
