This guy is inspiring... but not for the reasons you might think. Free soloing (climbing without any safety equipment or ropes) is clearly not for everyone, and definitely not for me! But for Alex Honnold, it very much is, and he’s one of the most famous and successful free-soloists of all time. But it's not the insane climbs that inspire me - it’s his approach to risk. In his book 'Alone on The Wall' Alex refers to free soloing as “low risk,” but how can that be? It’s because he meticulously plans and practices every grip, foot position and manoeuvre until he’s absolutely confident he can execute it safely without ropes. While the consequences are catastrophic if something goes wrong, his careful planning and preparation make the risks manageable.
