UK India Business Council recently compiled and launched the first-ever directory of UK India R&D collaborations. Detailing 20 separate projects, this beautifully presented report from my colleagues Kevin McCole, Tara Panjwani and Vidhi Vyas (with support from Mark Hannant and his team at Magenta) is not meant to be a comprehensive document, but it is a beginning... and one which we will continue to build upon in successive years. As hubs of learning and discovery, universities play a pivotal and multifaceted role in society which extends far beyond the classroom. Universities are the risk takers, the pioneers of ground-breaking research, the critical builders of knowledge as capital. They help transform societies and lives through economic, social and cultural development, and to be even more successful, universities must collaborate with other higher education (HE) institutions, with think tanks, with industry and with governments. These intersectoral partnerships lay the foundations for knowledge exchange, tech transfer, R&D and people-to-people links, all of which enable universities (and nations) to achieve their objectives and amplify their impact. UK universities are already working with India - doing joint R&D and co-creating new technology with a range of Indian institutions and organisations that are aligned to the SDGs. Today, UK and Indian researchers are working together on clean and renewable energy generation, food security, increased access to healthcare, education, water preservation, and job creation, to name a few. And the benefits will not just be limited to the UK-India sphere but will have the potential to deliver positive outcomes globally. #higherEducation #ukindia

The Indian Government just approved the ‘One Nation, One Subscription’ scheme for students🥹 The goal? To democratise access to research and academic resources for all Indian citizens📚 Imagine this: ✅ Universities, scholars, startups—gaining access to premium journals, research papers, and academic publications—without exorbitant subscription fees ✅ Enabling students—regardless of their socio-economic background—to achieve their full research potential ✅ Fueling India’s innovation by providing free and fair access to global knowledge The vision behind this initiative is crystal clear: 1️⃣ Make knowledge inclusive and accessible to everyone 2️⃣ Empower startups and entrepreneurs by breaking barriers to critical research 3️⃣ Drive academic excellence by enabling access to the world’s best resources. This isn’t just about access—it’s about transforming India’s intellectual capital💡 With this move, India is taking bold steps toward becoming a global knowledge hub. An excellent scheme by the Government of India which has already resulted in a substantial growth in patent filings by universities! However, there are some concerns that cannot be ignored: First, a lot of filings from educational institutions dont make it all the way to grant - either because the inventions are not deserving of a patent or because they lose funding and/or interest during prosecution. Second, the granted patents become an achievement for universities, something to hang on the wall. The inventions are hardly ever commercialised. India is in a ripe position where the government is aiding its innovators with not just discounted fees, but also additional funding and tax incentives. It is now time for the innovators to realise that a patent is a legal right you gain with your own education, skills and knowledge, and one of the very few rights that you can actually make money out of. Avoid sitting on your rights and explore ways to license!

India's bold move to democratize knowledge! 📚✨ A Nation develops by the knowledge of its citizens. Europe, US and tiny nation states like Singapore have leapfrogged in to development by the quality of its citizens. China has joined this elite club about 2 decades back and the results are discerible in its new technology, innovation and products. If the Indian population of 140 Crores are to contribute in the development, they need to have to access such knowledge. With the "One Nation-One Subscription" initiative, India is unlocking access to 13,000 prestigious journals for 18 million students, researchers, and faculty. Starting January 2025, this revolutionary $715 million investment spans over 30 major publishers like Elsevier, Springer Nature, and Wiley. Key highlights: A centralized knowledge portal for seamless academic access. Estimated to reduce research costs by 18%, fuelling innovation and learning. Significant support for scientific advancements and academic equity. A potential game-changer for developing countries, showcasing the importance of investing in accessible research infrastructure. The move has garnered praise worldwide, with many recognizing its potential to reshape the academic landscape and empower researchers globally. While some critics call for a focus on Open Access publishing, this initiative is undeniably a step toward bridging the knowledge gap and providing the tools for innovation, regardless of economic barriers. India's leadership continues to inspire, setting an example of how bold policies can create long-term impact. This initiative paves the way for a future where knowledge truly knows no boundaries. ************* We, the Exim Group are in the business of hashtag #customs and Foreign Trade Policy Consulting, Training and Placement, #freightforwarding and #customsclearance. Earlier it was seen as negative and was called brain drain, but first with globalisation, the subsequent growth in our economy, and the current business environment, lots of students have opted to return to India after their overseas education. Overseas education has become a great value add in the current context. Companies especially start-ups look for candidates who have some amount of international exposure to go with domain experience. But, As a student you need to make your choices carefully. Not all universities abroad might be able to offer you the kind of education and exposure you are looking for. Do your research, talk to peers and alumni, and understand the ROI before taking the plunge. #studyabroad #overseaseducation
