Dyslexia Awareness Month felt like the ideal time to complete the The Stark Griffin Dyslexia Academy Dyslexia Therapy course, which covers seven subtypes and six severity levels of dyslexia. As Malcolm Gladwell wrote in David and Goliath, "What sets dyslexics apart is not just their struggles, but how those struggles have forced them to think differently, to innovate, to persevere." This course provided both knowledge and insight into the unique strengths and challenges of dyslexic learners. The Health Professions Council of South Africa officially recognises the Stark-Griffin Dyslexia Assessment as South Africa’s standard tool for diagnosing dyslexia. This course felt tailor-made for me, as only HPCSA and South African Council For Educators (SACE) registered professionals are eligible to complete it—equipping me with 30 CPD points and a fresh perspective on what I should change or continue with when I teach. Before I can offer diagnosis-specific therapy, I’ll be completing my assignment internship, which is required for SGDA therapist registration. Who knows? I could be teaching a future Richard Branson, Steven Spielberg, Albert Einstein, or Pablo Picasso—all successful individuals with dyslexia who made massive contributions to their fields. With this training, I’m more motivated than ever to support learners better, recognising their potential to think differently, innovate, and persevere. Spaces still available❗️ Sign up now❗️ On March 19th, as part of Neurodiversity Celebration Week, a worldwide initiative that challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences, Marius Frank will host a fascinating webinar discussion exploring how we can integrate neurological differences into teaching practices. We have had a fantastic response so far but we are looking to add more people to this online event, to ensure that more people can learn about inclusive classrooms and how they can help students. Reflecting on my week after attending the Big Education Event and diving into literature on exclusions and Global directions in inclusive education. There’s so much discussion about creating inclusive education, yet our system still measures success through metrics such as Progress 8. This doesn't account for critical contextual factors like social deprivation, ethnic diversity, or the percentage of pupils with SEND in a school. Nor does it celebrate diversity, sensitivity, empathy, collaboration, culture, student voice, or emotional well-being—elements essential to a truly inclusive educational environment. Have you ever wondered if your child would flourish more in a specialist school? 🧠 Research indicates that early intervention ensures the child has the opportunity to consolidate the foundations of numeracy and literacy, which in turn supports their learning across the curriculum.
