Just over a year ago, California increased the minimum wage for limited-service restaurants in the state with at least 60 national locations to $20 from $16. In this edition of #EdgeworthInsights, partner Stephen G. Bronars examines the job losses and other adverse effects of this law on California’s least experienced workers. https://lnkd.in/e7Z_6mj8 #minimumwage #California #laborandemployment

Happy #LaborDay! As we collectively celebrate the historic and present day efforts of labor organizers in the U.S., we want to highlight a recent win: Michigan just became the 8th state in the country to end the subminimum wage for tipped workers! 🎉 Here’s more on why this is such a momentous victory: 💰What is the subminimum wage? A “subminimum wage” is a wage paid that is less than the federal or state mandated minimum wage. Federal law allows companies to pay less than the legally mandated minimum wage to certain groups of workers, including tipped works like restaurant employees. 🏛️Why does it matter? In the states that allow payment of a subminimum wage, tipped workers are more than twice as likely to live in poverty, and the rates are even higher for women and people of color. Shoutout to our partners at One Fair Wage for all of their ongoing advocacy efforts to get this issue on the ballot in states nationwide.

California Voters Have Declined to Raise Minimum Wage In a key election outcome, California voters have rejected a ballot measure that aimed to increase the state’s minimum wage to $18 an hour by 2026. This proposal would have positioned California to have the highest minimum wage in the U.S., potentially benefiting 2 million workers in industries such as hospitality and grocery. Opponents, including the California Chamber of Commerce, argued that the increase could lead to higher operational costs, increased taxes, and job reductions. Jennifer Barrera, the chamber’s president and CEO, highlighted that the focus on economic stability resonated with voters. This decision reflects the ongoing balance between raising wages and supporting business growth. #CaliforniaNews #MinimumWage #BallotMeasure #EconomicImpact #VoterDecisions #LivingWage #BusinessCosts #WorkersRights https://loom.ly/g_m8bp0

It was a good thing to reject a higher minimum wage, unfortunately Newsweek fails to point out that the last minimum wage increase cost many jobs in the state of California. From the Hoover Institution, Stanford University: "Last September, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed California Assembly Bill 1287 into law, which includes a $20 per hour minimum wage for fast-food workers and a fast-food regulatory council which has the authority to raise the industry’s minimum wage annually. But between last fall and January, California fast-food restaurants cut about 9,500 jobs, representing a 1.3 percent change from September 2023." #employment #wages #wage #unemployment #california #minimumwage https://lnkd.in/gir4GFvn

I read this last night in the Wall Street Journal about the logical steps many restaurants and other service establishments are taking in California as the $20 per hour minimum wage mandate kicks in there shortly. More on this in a subsequent post.
