Innovative AI tracking boosts recycling of flexible plastics in UK supermarket As part of its commitment to reducing plastic waste, discounter supermarket Aldi UK has employed an innovative artificial intelligence system developed by Greenback Recycling Technologies called eco2Veritas, to monitor and certify the recycling journey of flexible plastic packaging collected at its stores. This AI-powered system tracks the volume and type of plastic, including 62 tonnes of PE (polyethylene) and 25 tonnes of PP (polypropylene) collected through front-of-store points, detailing the sorting process and the conversion into new products. Certified recycled materials enable Aldi to receive funding from the Flexible Plastic Fund, supporting the recycling initiative. In its ongoing efforts to enhance recycling transparency and efficiency, Aldi UK, in collaboration with Polytag, also utilises invisible UV tags and QR codes to trace packaging materials through its supply chain to the Biffa Teeside recycling centre. This approach helps to underscore Aldi’s proactive measures in addressing plastic waste. Via ThePackHub Innovation Zone #packaging #packaginginnovation #sustainability #recycling

**Exciting Sustainability Milestone for Coca-Cola Europacific Partners!** Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) has successfully rolled out attached cap plastic bottle production across all its manufacturing sites in Great Britain. The final switch took place at their Morpeth, Northumberland factory, supported by a £7.5m investment. This new bottle design keeps caps connected to bottles after opening, making recycling easier for consumers. At full capacity, Morpeth will produce 17.5 million unit cases of attached cap bottles of Glaceau Smartwater annually. This achievement is part of CCEP's broader sustainability efforts, including increasing recycled PET in 500ml bottles to 100% and replacing plastic shrink wrap with sustainable cardboard outliers on multi-pack cans. Allan French C.Dir, FIOD, Operations Director at Morpeth, shared his pride in the site's contributions, highlighting their zero-waste-to-landfill achievement and commitment to sustainability. Stephen Moorhouse, CCEP VP and General Manager for Great Britain emphasised the importance of these initiatives in their "World Without Waste" and "This is Forward" strategies. Certainly a good approach to achieve sustainability and circularity. Besides supermarkets, the technology should be promoted and adopted in various institutes and organizations as well. #sustainability #circularity
Lidl, a German supermarket chain, has installed state-of-the-art recycling machines in its stores. These machines are designed to enhance the recycling process for customers by accepting a wide variety of recyclable materials, including plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and glass containers. They use advanced technology to sort and process these materials efficiently. The installation of these machines is part of Lidl's commitment to sustainability and reducing environmental impact. By providing an easy and convenient way for customers to recycle, Lidl aims to increase recycling rates and promote a circular economy. These machines also often offer incentives, such as store credits or discounts, to encourage customers to participate in recycling efforts. #circulareconomy #lidl #reuse #recycle #upcycle #zerowaste

This week, we’re spotlighting a significant development from Sainsbury's, as reported by Packaging Europe. The much-loved British supermarket has partnered with Graphic Packaging International, LLC and Moy Park to introduce the PaperSeal Shape paperboard tray for their breaded chicken products. This innovative tray could reduce plastic usage by up to 82% per tray, potentially eliminating 300 metric tonnes of plastic from Sainsbury’s supply chain annually. The tray also matches the shelf life of traditional plastic trays while being recyclable and compliant with the UK’s On-Pack Recycling Label (OPRL) guidelines. At Wisden, we believe that sustainability is no longer just a trend but a crucial business imperative, and Sainsbury’s latest packaging initiative is a clear example of this shift. Here's exactly why: 𝟏. 𝐈𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐬 𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐭 The dramatic reduction in plastic use is a major step forward in tackling the environmental impact of packaging. This kind of innovation shows that it’s possible to create solutions that perform just as well as traditional options while significantly reducing our environmental footprint. It’s encouraging to see such meaningful progress in this area. 𝟐. 𝐈𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐚 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 This isn’t just a win for Sainsbury’s — it’s a win for the entire industry. By setting a new standard for sustainable packaging, Sainsbury’s is paving the way for other companies to follow. The broader adoption of these kinds of innovations could have a substantial impact, reducing the amount of plastic waste that ends up in our environment. 𝟑. 𝐈𝐭 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 As sustainability becomes a top priority for consumers, this move allows people to make purchases that align with their values. It’s about more than just buying a product — it’s about being part of a bigger, positive change. Packaging that’s designed with the planet in mind benefits everyone. 𝟒. 𝐈𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 What’s truly inspiring about this development is the level of collaboration involved. It demonstrates that when companies unite with a common goal — such as reducing plastic waste — remarkable things can happen. Looking ahead, we believe that innovations like the PaperSeal Shape tray will soon become the norm, not the exception. Packaging has the potential to protect both our products and our planet, and we, at Wisden, are here to help make that vision a reality! #SustainablePackaging #PrintingNews #Innovation #B2B #Packaging

Can we rely on the average shopper to separate materials for recycling? The answer is a big resounding NO. So great to see Aldi UK going this route. Supermarket chain Aldi has introduced new plastic-free packaging for its everyday own-label toothbrushes. The move is part of the retailer’s ongoing commitment to reduce its environmental footprint and develop plastic alternative for its products packaging. Aldi switched to a fully recyclable cardboard alternative from the previous plastic and card packaging for its two-packs of Dentitex Soft and Whitening toothbrush. With this initiative, the supermarket is expected to eliminate approximately 17 tonnes of plastic packaging each year. The new packaging also promotes home recycling for customers **without needing to separate materials**.

POV: Behaviour change starts with making it as easy as possible to do the right thing, as well as giving meaning. Our colleagues presented last week at the Sustainability in Packaging conference. The blue bag was a central topic. Belgium was applauded for its work on the collection, sorting and recycling of flexible plastic packaging. With discussions on recyclability at scale in full swing, Belgium is paving the way. 👉 How? In just under 4 years we turned the sorting message for citizens around. Flexible plastic packaging is now collected and sorted in two different streams, for high quality recycling. The key to success? A clear sorting message and accessible collection system, thanks to the blue bag. During the panel discussion, when asked about deposit return in Belgium, they presented the work on a smart, digital system. Such a system builds upon the success of the blue bag, offering millions of collection points for beverage packaging at home, in addition to collection points in the public domain. 👉 Why? A smart, digital deposit return system allows citizens to redeem their deposit at the moment and the location of consumption - at home through the blue bag and out of home through blue bins. #betterworld #packaging

Britain’s largest supermarket, Tesco, is taking a step to reduce plastic waste by trialing a new method—lasering barcodes and product information directly onto avocados! 🌍🥑 Currently, this innovative approach is being tested in around 270 stores in southeast England. If rolled out nationwide, it could eliminate the need for a million plastic stickers each year. While this method works well for avocados, it's not suitable for all produce. Nonetheless, it's a promising start in the right direction. It's crucial for businesses to set meaningful plastic and waste reduction goals and hold themselves accountable. By showing leadership in sustainability, companies can set new standards and demonstrate their commitment to caring for our planet. #Sustainability #PlasticReduction #EcoFriendly #Innovation #Leadership

Grocery retailers are increasingly adopting eco-friendly packaging solutions for their private-label ranges in response to evolving customer preferences and a growing focus on environmental sustainability. Check out some recent innovative packaging solutions: 🔹 Coop Sweden has transitioned its pasta sauce packaging from glass jars to Tetra Pak cartons, which will lower CO2 emissions by 80% and significantly reduce the supply chain footprint. The new packaging allows for 64% more items to be transported per pallet. "At Coop, we always review what we can do to continue to improve our responsibility, and evaluate what and where in the chain we can make improvements," commented Minna Björklund, EVM range manager at Coop Sweden, to ESM - European Supermarket Magazine. 🔹 Waitrose & Partners is introducing a circular recycling scheme for its own-label curries, using trays made from plastic collected through UK household recycling. Partnering with Wrap, Pilgrim’s Europe, and Faerch, this initiative aims to reduce virgin plastic use by employing already recycled plastic. The scheme will also enhance the lifecycle of high-quality PET through easily accessible kerbside recycling. “This is an exciting example of packaging innovation that helps us not only utilize plastic that is often devalued in the recycling process, but allow it to be reprocessed again and again,” said Denise Mathieson FIMMM, Waitrose packaging innovation & delivery manager, to The Grocer. 🔹 Jumbo Supermarkten in the Netherlands has introduced a new one-litre capless pack for its organic milk, expected to save over 9,000 kilograms of plastic and 23,000 kilograms of CO2 emissions annually. This initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce packaging across various categories, including pizza, Easter eggs, and salads, resulting in a total reduction of 58,000 kilograms of packaging material and 184,000 kilograms of CO2 emissions. The company has ensured that the new packaging maintains quality and convenience for shoppers. Ready to enhance your private-label range with sustainable packaging?
