It's Giving Tuesday! We normally save our requests for donor support for McGill24 in March, the day when gifts to the RGCS Charles Taylor Student Fellowship are supported by matching funds. McGill24 remains the priority. But Giving Tuesday and the preparation for the end of the tax year is also an important time for a lot of people's thinking about giving. We're $1900 away from the threshold that will let us initiate the renaming of the reading room as the Judith N. Shklar ('49 '50) Library, which is also halfway to our goal of endowing the Student Fellowship at a level that will support it for the long term. If you've benefitted from being a Student Fellow, or from having the Fellowship as part of your academic community, or just want to support the long-term future of intense study of political theory and philosophy at McGill, will you help get us across that threshold? https://lnkd.in/d6GRzSXt If you do make a gift, please let us know by direct message or e-mail; otherwise it can take up to six weeks for us to find out about it from the University.

As we approach the end of the financial year, we invite you to support maths education in Australia, by donating to the AMSI Foundation. Your generosity will help strengthen the mathematical sciences pipeline and ensure all Australians benefit from the economic progress and social wellbeing that comes from mathematical literacy. Your donation will create impact by: 1. Supporting participation of females, first nations, regional and other under-represented groups in the mathematical sciences. 2. Delivering programs that increase student participation in maths. 3. Illuminating the many career pathways in today’s data driven workforce. 4. Facilitating employment linkages for maths graduates. To donate, please visit: https://lnkd.in/gv-nghet Every contribution, regardless of size, makes a significant impact. All donations over $2 are tax-deductible.

https://gofund.me/835aec3a Q: When is donating money to a fraternity a sensible decision? A: When higher education is under attack from extremism on every side fueled by a mass media and social media landscape that promotes conflict in order to weaken our institutions. When there is finally a push for the middle. When there is real optimism and progress toward bringing everyone together and putting the unity back into community. When there is a spark of hope that we are turning this thing around and returning to the values that make our country great. When we recognize that we are all stronger together no matter what our individual beliefs and that we owe it to one another to come together while respecting and embracing the issues that divide us. When we start to realize once again that diversity is a superpower and the American democracy is built upon differences in culture, differences in beliefs, and differences of opinion. When you realize that the institutions in our country that promote individual thought and academic freedom are the basis of our strength. When you see that our children are finally emerging from the cloud of Covid and learning again how to socialize and share their lives together. When you stop to remember how much the fraternities, teams, groups, organizations that were foundational in your college experience shaped the rest of your life. When it really matters. In other words... today.

One of the things that stands out to me in this report is the fact that financial aid represents 39.2% of gifts to endowment and just 9.9% of gifts to current operations. After spending significant time this week talking with two university clients about the importance of financial aid to their finances and to their campaign goals, I am thinking about how this reality may need to be better reflected in our institutions' financial plans and if we need to be rethinking gift opportunities for financial aid to inspire more spendable gifts.
Giving to U.S. colleges and universities was at its second highest level in fiscal year 2023, according to key findings from the CASE Insights on Voluntary Support of Education. The 757 institutions participating in the survey reported a total of $58 billion in gifts in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2023. With the exception of 2022, this represents the highest historical level of giving since the inception of the VSE. “The philanthropic investment of over $58 billion in higher education institutions in the United States last year should be a source of celebration and pride,” says Sue Cunningham, President and CEO of CASE. “That so many individuals and organizations support colleges and universities indicates nationwide recognition of the immense value these institutions provide through transforming lives and society.” Read the release: https://bit.ly/48vcplM

Today is #PittDayofGiving. And I feel strongly that you, reading this, should give a small (or large!) donation to the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA). I gave to support scholarships. Here's my case: 1. Never before has our divided country, and the world, needed intelligent and empathetic leadership in the public sector more than now. Public service graduate schools like GSPIA train these leaders. 2. AND graduates of schools like GSPIA, on average, do not make the money that individuals with law, medical, business or many other graduate degrees make upon graduation in order to pay back their loans. This can deter qualified candidates from pursuing these degrees and in turn, public service. 3. If you're reading this in Pittsburgh, chances are you know a GSPIA graduate and they are in the social, public, or private sector in Pittsburgh, making moves to improve our city and our world. 4. By giving today, you unlock matching funds! So consider giving to GSPIA today during #PittDayOfGiving to support our future politicians, nonprofit leaders, and private sector advocates so that they may go forth and serve others. And thank you!

A few weeks ago we looked at the amount of universities in Germany. This week, we also want to check out the amount of universities in the US. According to a ranking from 2021, there are a total of 3,982 degree-granting postsecondary institutions in the US. Of the 3,982 universities, there were 1,625 public four-year and two-year colleges, 1,660 private nonprofit four-year and two-year institutions, and 697 for-profit schools.

Special Consideration for College Applications is Over! California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a groundbreaking bill that officially ends preferential treatment for wealthy families, alumni connections, and donations in the college admissions process. This new legislation applies to private non-profit universities, where factors such as legacy status (having relatives who are alumni) and financial contributions will no longer influence admissions decisions. Instead, the focus will shift to merit and qualifications, ensuring a level playing field for all students, regardless of their background or financial status. This law marks a significant step towards prioritizing hard work, dedication, and academic achievements in admissions. These changes highlight California’s commitment to making higher education more inclusive, fair, and accessible, giving every student an equal opportunity to succeed. 🌟 #HigherEducation #EqualOpportunity #FairnessInAdmissions

“𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 .” —𝗔𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗘𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗶𝗻 You know, Back in 1902, The Rockefeller Family donated $180 million (a staggering $6.3 Billion of today’s money) to fund the General Education Board. In plain sight, J. D. Rockefeller did a great job helping the United States education system. But, what we haven't seen is education for learning to know ourselves. And, self knowledge is the one powerful tool we have to set us free and develop ourselves to new levels of achievement. Therefore, I have created this series of articles for my newsletter: "𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟱 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗧𝘆𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗨𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵" We are in the fourth article of five.
