Supplier engagement is critical to Scope 3 action -Engaging suppliers is essential for managing Scope 3 upstream emissions, as doing so aligns climate ambitions across the entire supply chain. -Corporates can leverage their purchasing power to kick-start a feedback loop and cascade change across their supply chains. -The first step to action is to create transparency on supplier emissions data. This, in turn, supports corporates in setting targets and enables them to institute contractual obligations (for example, incentives) for suppliers in line with their transition plan (including targeted decarbonization levers). -Engaging with suppliers drives a disproportionate impact on setting upstream Scope 3 targets. Corporates that engage with suppliers are 6.6 times more likely to have a target and a transition plan that is aligned to 1.5°C. #SupplierEnagagement #PlanetSustech #Scope3 #Sustainability #ESGReporting with Planet Sustech CDP Boston Consulting Group (BCG) Big Challenges, Simple Remedies June 2024

Managing emissions along the supply chain, so called upstream Scope 3 emissions, is becoming a strategic priority, especially as environmental regulations tighten. There are obvious tensions with the other three classic supply chain management goals (cost, quality, and reliability), necessitating trade-offs to maintain balance. In this brief article, we outline how procurement can support supply chain emissions transparency, thus helping companies define their strategies and balance commercial requirements against sustainability measures.

A supplier emissions management strategy is vital for companies pursuing Net Zero targets 🎯 Why is it important to start now? Regulations ⚖️ From CSRD to CBAM, companies are being requested to present a supply chain emissions mitigation strategy backed with credible and trustworthy data to meet the requirements of new regulations impacting businesses today. Standards 🪧 Accurate Supplier emissions data helps companies demonstrate climate leadership when reporting to CDP or EcoVadis. Equipped with this data, they protect themselves from greenwashing, now and in the future. Science-Based Targets 🎯 With scope 3 recognised as the largest source of emissions, the Science Based Targets initiative makes supply chain emissions analysis and reporting a requirement for setting targets. Reaching Net Zero by 2050 starts with sustainable procurement today. By acting now, companies can demonstrate measurable progress and equip themselves to make data-driven procurement decisions. Naama Avni Kadosh, Director of Partnership for Carbon Transparency (PACT) at WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, delivered a thought-provoking presentation at the Net-Zero Supply Chain Summit in Amsterdam. Her session, titled "Beyond Compliance: Decoding Scope 3 Data for Real Decarbonization," focused on the distinction between regulatory compliance and truly impactful decarbonization efforts. Naama highlighted that while collecting Scope 3 emissions data is crucial for compliance, it alone does not drive significant emission reductions. Instead, businesses should leverage reliable data to make strategic decisions across supply chains, product development, and innovation. She also addressed misconceptions about the complexity and cost of engaging suppliers in this process. Key points from her presentation included: - Breaking myths around Scope 3 emissions and their perceived complexity - Using data for real decarbonization rather than just reporting - Transitioning from compliance to impact, focusing on meaningful emission reductions - Adopting a unified Scope 3 methodology to facilitate effective supplier engagement Naama's insights offered practical solutions for businesses looking to move beyond compliance and drive real change in their supply chains. Stay tuned for more updates from the summit! #NetZero #Sustainability #SupplyChain #Scope3 #Decarbonization #PACT #NetZeroSCM2024
