thanks Alison Jenner of CNA for inviting her to share her thoughts on our National Mental Health & Wellbeing Strategy and the recent 'Advancing Mental Health Motion' parliamentary debate. Thankful to wonderful editors like Alison, Suling Lin and Jeanette Tan who kindly think of her sometimes. When they do, they 'force' her to gather her thoughts and inputs from the communities meaningfully to further the mental health conversation in Singapore. Because we are never done. Truth be told, this was a stream of consciousness that came last weekend when she was finally Covid-healed and could go through each policy response speech to piece together the tapestry of our mental health measures. The Government announced a slew of capacity-building measures built around an innovative 4-Tiered Care Model that provides a common framework with multiple touchpoints by 2030, super yay! What's not clear is the basis for these measures announced - for example, how do we know increasing to 90 Community Outreach Teams (CREST) with 15 catering to youths to be deployed to raise awareness, to detect, and to refer individuals with mental health needs to appropriate services by 2030 (currently 73 teams with eight youth teams) - 23% and 87.5% increases respectively - will be enough? Or that an increase of 7% of acute psychiatric beds from current 1000 to 1070 i.e merely 70 beds in 6 years will support the needs of those who are ill? What also need to be clearer are our target outcomes with this slew of measures. "For instance, are we working towards reducing waiting times by X per cent by 2030 with these strategies? Or do we want to see suicides reduced to Y and stress-related illnesses to Z in six years? What do we hope to see as the mental health prevalence in 2030 with these measures to create a more effective mental health ecosystem?" Do you know that we have kept our mental health spend consistent at 3% of total health expenditure for the last many years? But if one in seven Singaporeans (14 per cent) has a mental health condition according to the 2016 Singapore Mental Health Study (and likely more by now), should we not invest more than 3 per cent of the total health budget on mental health? Where, and how much, we invest is where the change will be. Dare we boldly declare mental well-being as fundamental a priority as our economic well-being for sustainable and meaningful growth as a nation? Imagine celebrating success equally in our “gross well-being progress (GWP)” alongside gross domestic product (GDP). "We must be the change we want to see around us. Our present circumstances don’t determine where we go; they merely determine where we start. I look forward to the day when we embrace our mental well-being and personal thriving as a life goal individually and a sustainable growth imperative as a nation." What does success look like for a mentally healthy and thriving Singapore? (Would love to hear your response in comments 🙂)
Singapore has committed to make mental health a key priority. The specific target outcomes, however, remain somewhat unclear, says former NMP Anthea Indira Ong.

Did you know that 75% of Americans feel mental health issues are treated worse than physical ailments? Despite a growing awareness of mental health challenges, the gap in treatment remains significant. According to Fortune, a recent survey by West Health and Gallup reveals troubling perceptions of mental health care: ⚫ 81% see an increase in mental illness over the past five years. ⚫ Only 5% believe mental health is treated better than physical health. ⚫ The U.S. health care system's report card? A dismal "D" grade for handling mental health conditions. But why does this gap persist? Cost is a major barrier, with many citing treatment expenses as the top deterrent. Stigma and difficulty finding providers also play significant roles. It's time to break down these barriers and prioritize mental health care for all. Let's work together to change the narrative and ensure everyone receives the support they need. 💚 #MentalHealthMatters #BreakTheStigma #BLHF #HealthcareForAll #JoyIsOurNorthStar

Message from the Minister of Mental Health and Addictions and Associate Minister of Health – World Mental Health Day From: Health Canada Statement October 10, 2024 | Ottawa, ON | Health Canada Today is World Mental Health Day and this year's theme is, “It is Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace.” Prioritizing workplace mental health is good for people, companies, and communities, and we are committed to improving the health and mental well-being of all Canadians regardless of where they live, work or play. As employers and employees, we bring our whole selves to work, including stress from major events and day-to-day life. Likewise, stress from work can impact our mental health in our lives outside of work. It's okay not to be okay – help is available if you need it. To ensure that help is available where and when people need it, the Government of Canada is taking a compassionate approach to provide a range of support services and resources that can help address mental health challenges. Through the Working Together to Improve Health Care for Canadians Plan, close to $200 billion over 10 years is being invested to improve health services across the country.
