Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to speak in front of the world’s leading educational policymakers at UNESCO HQ. My task was to discuss the influence of AI in education, but it quickly became clear that something was missing from the conversation—the voices of practising teachers.
There was a lot of talk about the world’s looming teacher shortage, projected to reach a staggering 44 million by 2030, yet few answers as to why this shortage persists.
In my speech, I decided to be as frank as possible, sharing real stories from my classroom. These are the realities we don’t often hear enough about, and I believe this lack of genuine perspectives has led to the unrealistic expectations placed upon us—by parents, school leaders, inspectors, and, as a result, even by students themselves.
I also tried to convey a key point: policymakers need to hear far more from those still on the front lines because we’re a diverse group facing vastly different challenges. (As I said in my speech, I doubt I fully represent the maths teachers at my school, let alone teachers on the other side of the world.)
The video below captures the introduction to my speech. It won’t reflect every teacher’s views, but I hope it gave leaders something to consider. What other honest reflections do you think need to be shared?

We are sharing some insights from our partners in the EERA project from Education Sub Saharan Africa (ESSA) sharing inspiration for 2025. Together, Southern Hemisphere and ESSA have been working hard and creatively with African Education Researchers over the last 18 months to identify the system level interventions that will change the field of education research in Africa. The concept notes have just been released - https://lnkd.in/ehiqs9Bh - launch to follow in 2024. We hope these inspire people wanting to improve education in Africa and beyond.

In March, ASCI Europe 🌍 hosted ICEC (International Christian Educators Conference) Europe 2024 in beautiful Prague, Czech Republic 🇨🇿, and many #ICSBudapest staff members attended.
This year's conference theme was "Let Us Grow in Every Way." In Ephesians 4:15, Paul challenges us with, "But speaking the truth in love, let us grow in every way into him who is the head—Christ."
ACSI recognizes that the calling as Christian ✝️ 🍎 educators is precious, one that requires growth in faith and practices to teach students to stand against the challenges that will surely come to them.
ICEC invited Christian teachers and leaders together for two primary purposes:
- presenting challenging professional development
- spurring vital spiritual encouragement
The conference employed teacher-to-teacher workshops 📈 and small group discussions 🗣️ to allow attendees to interact with other schools 🏫 and learn from and encourage one another.
The few days in Prague also provided a sweet respite from the daily routine for teachers. The staff was able to fellowship 🫶 and see some of the city's sights 🏙️ together. There was even a mini-reunion for Ms. Rickard and a former student now teaching at another European 🌍 school.
Overall, the conference proved to be a rewarding 🌟 experience, promoting professional and spiritual growth for our staff.
