It was an honor to represent the members of the Hungarian Battery Association at the SET Plan conference in Budapest last week. A few takeaway messages for the battery sector from the Advancing Emerging Energy Technologies panel discussion with Edel Sheridan, Nikos Nikolakakos, Sandro Starita, and Patric Clerens, chaired by Vangelis Tsimas. The energy storage industry is brimming with incremental innovations that are making electric vehicle batteries not only more competitive but also more sustainable. To continue this trajectory, continuous research and innovation are necessary to further reduce costs, and address concerns on safety and sustainability. The ideal car battery should be simple, inexpensive, and not the most valuable component of an electric vehicle. Furthermore, maritime batteries are emerging as a viable technology. However, the journey from lab to fab for batteries is costly and demands more funding. The scaling up and enforcement of recycling, particularly for critical materials like lithium and graphite, are imperative. And let's not forget the significance of innovative chemistries that can utilise cheaper, simpler, and locally-sourced materials, as well as production technologies that minimise costs and ecological footprints. We need to address the whole battery ecosystem, and make energy storage profitable.

What does it take to develop future-focused projects in the heart of Europe, in the Port of Antwerp-Bruges and Port of Rotterdam? Nancy De Groof, our Vice President Advario Belgium, took the stage at the #Stocexpo conference in Rotterdam, to reflect on changes, opportunities... and the importance of collaboration. Advario strengthened its position in the area in 2023, by acquiring a land lease in the Port of Rotterdam (https://lnkd.in/ea49jGaA). Our Rotterdam site will complement our existing terminals in Antwerp. Our position in Belgium and the Netherlands now covers three different locations, each with a distinct profile. Advario Stolthaven Antwerp (ASA) is a large terminal with a diverse portfolio in chemicals, fuels and gases. On the opposite bank of the river Scheldt we have Antwerp Gas Terminal (AGT), the largest LPG hub in northwestern Europe and our center of gas storage expertise. In Rotterdam, Advario has the opportunity to build the terminal of the future, a terminal focused on green molecules, on a greenfield location at the heart of the Botlek. The three terminals have a different scope, and have different opportunities. Nancy: “At ASA, together with our partner Stolthaven Terminals, our focus is on the renewal and reconfiguration of our chemical park, and the reconversion of petroleum infrastructure for the storage of sustainable fuels. At AGT, together with Fluxys, we look to expand into ammonia storage. At both locations we are part of the conversation on CO2 storage. And in Rotterdam, we are exploring value-adding partnerships that include co-siting with a producer of sustainable products.” “Three different profiles, three different assets,” said Nancy, “But what they have in common is that they all fit Advario’s future-focused strategy, are built on collaboration and deep partnerships, and have the potential to play a pivotal role in the #transition to cleaner energy.”

"The French strategy for hydrogen includes few ambitions at the international level beyond scientific and technological cooperation within the European Union. The political priority is to develop a domestic industry sized to meet national demand, which is seen as a more secure sourcing strategy than relying on imports." Research Institute for Sustainability (RIFS) will soon be publishing a book about the geopolitics of hydrogen. In collaboration with RIFS, we are publishing a preview of a chapter of this book, written by Ines Bouacida: "The French Hydrogen Strategy: Focusing on Domestic Hydrogen Production to Decarbonise Industry and Mobility". 👇

Belgium is home to more castles per square kilometre than anywhere else in the world. At VARO Energy, we see our partnerships with our customers as our castles - strong, enduring, and built to last. This was celebrated during our biennial customer event last week outside of Brussels. It was energising spending time with our customers and institutional partners. Their support is the foundation of our success. Belgium represents an important part of our customer base, with almost a quarter of the Belgian fuel consumption distributed through our 8 VARO terminals in this geography. The event highlighted upcoming changes in the energy system through interactive sessions. Topics included forward-leaning perspectives on regulation, insights across the biofuels value chain, and strategies to electrify commercial fleets. Given Belgium's significant logistics sector - more commercial vehicles per capita than in other VARO countries (source: 2023 new vehicle registrations, ACEA) - e-mobility is poised to play a crucial role. Partnering means sharing insights, and it was rewarding to reinforce the strong relationships with our customers. We look forward to advancing the Energy Transition together. Many thanks to our customers and all VARO teams involved for their passion in making this a memorable event, including Olivier Vanbiervliet, Commercial Director BELUX, Monique Boers, Marketing & Communication Specialist, Sacha Konan, VP Commercial and President VARO Benelux & France, Marcel Andriessen, VP Biofuels, Sandor D., Sr. Business Development Manager EV, theo pannekeet, EVP New Energies and Innovation.

MAN Energy Solutions has launched the AmmoniaMot 2 project, advancing the development of ammonia-powered four-stroke engines for the maritime industry. Building on the success of the original AmmoniaMot project, this new initiative will focus on creating medium-speed, dual-fuel engines that utilize ammonia, a carbon-free fuel. Supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), the project brings together industry leaders and research institutes to accelerate decarbonisation in marine transport. Running for 3,5 years, it aims to develop a test engine for cargo vessels and auxiliary generators on large ammonia-powered ships. Several other companies are also exploring ammonia as a sustainable fuel for the maritime industry. For instance, Wärtsilä and Samsung Heavy Industries have been working on similar projects to develop ammonia-fueled engines.

Just kicked off on the Energy Transition Stage at #WindEnergyHamburg with our first WindEurope session: "Scaling up Europe’s supply chain" with Wadia Fruergaard and Felix Henseler, moderated by Laura Casuscelli. Looking at the impact of resilience criteria, and how the NZIA should be implemented by to get the best results and avoid raising costs in Europe. Key points: - boosting demand in Europe is essential to ensure that we do scale up. - good auction design will give the industry the right investment signals, and double-sided CfDs are better than uncapped negative bidding; - resilience criteria are well meaning but if badly implemented, could lead to extra layers of complexity that would ultimately raise costs and make the industry less competitive, so the devil will be in the details #supplychain #nzia Rébecca Brulé
